Ted Cruz Attacks Beto O'Rourke for Denouncing Police Murder in a Black Church

By Jonathan Chait@jonathanchait

Botham Shem Jean was murdered in his apartment by a police officer, and the most exculpatory account for her actions — that she mistakenly believed she was in her own home — is highly damning. Dallas police subsequently leaked the claim that Jean possessed a small amount of marijuana in his home in a blatant attempt to tarnish his image and retroactively justify the murder.

Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke has denounced this incident as an example of racial injustice in policing, of which there is overwhelming evidence exists on a wide scale. (Radley Balko recently compiled a vast store of rigorous evidence of the criminal justice system mistreating African-Americans.) O’Rourke’s opponent, Ted Cruz, who is attempting to paint him as a left-wing radical, tweeted a short clip of O’Rourke denouncing Jean’s murder during a town hall at the Good Street Baptist Church in Dallas:

From Cruz’s point of view, the clip is damning of his opponent. It is not clear precisely which part of O’Rourke’s argument he disagrees with — that it’s wrong for police to murder an innocent person in their home? That it was wrong for them to release the claim that the murder victim had some pot in his house? That O’Rourke opposes the killings of unarmed black men in general?

Cruz has not taken issue with any of these specific points on the campaign trail. Instead he has tended to dissolve the issue into a broader question of respect for the police, which he displays with his characteristic smarm. Nowhere in this clip does O’Rourke attack the police in general, dispute the need for effective policing, or insist that all or most officers are racist.

Shit, Ted Cruz has got to be the most repulsive man ever to have his photo taken. He makes my flesh crawl.

That said, Cruz must be panicking. He’s throwing spaghetti at the wall.

totally misdirected and misguided political attacks...

He's not well liked in Congress from what I hear. I can see why after I've heard him during the 2016 primaries.

You can tell he's getting desperate...and I can see why, his opponent is smart, intelligent, and not one to take things lying down, and sharp on his feet.

Cruz is definitely out of his element and is clearly lagging in intelligent responses, i.e., O'Rourke taking people's BBQ away or banning BBQ...or something crazy like this. What an idiot.

6. when beto responds to cruz he could preface it with "that's what limbaugh says but...."

because that's true.

cruz, more than most con reps and senators, channels the alternate reality that limbaugh runs the fertilizer factory for.

any time cruz says he suggests he knows what he knows what "the people want" he's talking about what he's picked from the smorgasbord of prechewed talking points limbaugh regurgitates from the GOP think tanks and sold to the dittohead teabags in the talk radio states.

if a dem candidate invokes "limbaugh" he will immediately connect with the trump audience

And this will incite more to leave this idiot and back Beto. No one lies as much as cruz does that isn't corrupt, and him protecting putin and trump is a good example of who he's loyal too, and its not the American people. HE will continue to vote to destroy Medicaid , Medicare, and now they want to destroy Social Security , and he's all in with them to do it. Cruz also voted for their tax scam robbing millions of health care to give their wealthy donors their tax windfall , or from bribes they were given to their campaigns. If any money was funneled from russians for putin to cruz it will come out , and he'll be toast. Beto's kicking his ass all over the place , and its growing against cruz , and for Beto. Cruz is the most hated person in all of Congress for good reasons. He's another serial liar too.
