The Senate GOP is offering to hold the hearing on Wednesday after Ford asked for a Thursday hearing.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is giving Christine Blasey Ford attorney’s until the end of the day Friday to work out terms of next week’s proposed hearing on Ford’s allegations that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her, according to a Republican senator.

Senate GOP is offering to hold the hearing on Wednesday after Ford asked for a Thursday hearing and is meeting some of Ford’s requests but not others, the senator said.

“We’ll do it on Wednesday, we expect the accuser before the accused and we do intend to have the counsel do the questioning,” the senator said, summing up the Republicans’ stance. The party is OK with limiting the hearing to one camera as requested by Ford and has also “acquiesced” to Ford’s request that Kavanaugh not be in the same room as her, the senator said.

GOP members of the Judiciary Committee held a conference call on Friday morning to discuss how to respond to Ford’s requests on Thursday. And barring new revelations, the party plans to vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination in Judiciary Committee shortly after hearing her testimony next week.

...... she should do a major TV interview the night of the hearing, not before the hearing. That way she won't give the lawyers any time to prepare for what she might say. And she would still be able get her message out to the American public as well as address events of the hearing.

No questioning by counsel, only by the Senators. Counsel does not get to vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation, only Senators do. The Senators need to ask their own questions to make up their own minds on Kavanaugh's honesty, character, integrity, and ethics.

I can understand having Dr. Ford go first, so they know what to ask Kavanaugh about...however, Kavanaugh must not see nor hear of any of Ford's testimony prior to his questioning or at least he needs to be alone with no means to contact others. This is a deal breaker. He does not get time to prep and consult with WH, Senators, and spinmeisters on how best to counteract her live testimony. He can prepare by having access to her opening statement and/or any paperwork she makes available to the committtee prior to her testimony.

The GOP plans to confirm Kavanaugh even if admits to it. They believe this is all for show and they have the votes. Silencing individual rights while promoting those of corporations, the NRA, and Christian zealots and denying women access to reproductive healthcare and equal opportunities is crucial for the GOP. Trump needs someone on the court that believes the President is omnipotent. We NEED some Senators with open minds to weigh what is said and determine if this man, Kavanaugh, really is deserving of a seat on the highest court.

They can pretend that they tried to meet her halfway... but the simple fact is (IMO) they would prefer that she refuse to testify (which ends it and they move to confirmation).

And there's absolutely zero chance that anyone would agree to him not being able to hear what she says. Someone accused of a crime has a right to hear the accusation and they also have a right to avail themselves of counsel before replying.

I wouldn't say so. There are clearly at least two Republicans who have said that they would vote against him if he was lying about it. He might have gotten past them by admitting it with an "I was young and stupid and did things that I would never EVER consider now" - but once he denied the charges he can't go back. The previous spin that he had perjured himself during the hearings was wishful thinking based on speculation that was very unlikely to be provable... but this would be a clear lie.

I'm sure every Dem senator who asks questions will point out their colleagues are too scared to ask questions themselves.

The Rs had the advantage for a few days, but as soon as they signaled they were willing to negotiate terms of her appearance, that disappeared. Now they're back to trying to set artificial deadlines which won't work since Dr Ford has said she's willing to testify.

It's too bad Dr Ford does not want Kavanaugh in the same room with her because I believe he would slink away like the coward he is if confronted by her.
