Orrin Hatch: Even if Kavanaugh committed rape 'it would be hard for senators not to consider who

Source: raw story

17 Sep 2018 at 14:56 ET

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) on Monday said that he believed Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh did not attempt to rape Christine Ford when the two of them were teenagers — but he also tried to downplay what it would mean if the accusations were true.

According to NBC News’ Leigh Ann Caldwell, Hatch on Monday said that he had spoken with Kavanaugh and had found him to “honest” and “straightforward” in his denials about Ford’s accusations. Hatch also said of Ford that “there’s some question whether she’s mixed up” in her account of the alleged incident.

Bloomberg News’ Laura Litvan reports that Hatch was then asked how he would feel about Kavanaugh’s nomination if it turned out that the allegations were true, and Hatch replied that “if that were true, I think it would be hard for senators not to consider who he is today.”

I hate Raw Story because their headlines are inaccurate and overdone. Kavanaugh has not been accused of rape, but of attempted rape. There is a difference. Raw Story's headline says Hatch would excuse Kavanaugh even if he'd raped Ford, but that's not what Hatch said and that's not what Kavanaugh was accused of. I am not in any way trying to excuse either of them, but I hate it when "our side" slants news stories. Leave that to the right-wingers.

To make way for Romney.

Grassley and Hatch were in the group that picked Clarence Thomas.

5 women were waiting to back Hill. They refused to let them testify. Ted Kennedy was there, too. I remember how embarrassed he looked passing judgement with his History. They were all sickening.

If he's lying (and I believe he is)

that's the problem. We can't have a SCOTUS who lies.

Something happened back then that caused harm. That's serious.

But for the simple purposes of a judge, testifying to become a SCOTUS - it's as ez as lying under oath.

That disqualifies him from the job.

against a woman, he would be an attempted rapist, and has so far gone unpunished for it. What the hell is the matter with these people. The republican amoral filth that is running our country today leaves one with a real feeling of despair for the future.

The alleged rape attempt happened 30+ years ago, so there's no evidence apart from Ford's word. She says he did it, he says he didn't, and thus far there's no way to back up her statement.

If this were to go to trial, he'd certainly be acquitted. Unless more evidence of some kind is forthcoming, I'm not so sure this will derail his nomination. It's all too easy for the other side to wave this off as a hit piece.

If more women come forward with accounts of attempted rape or other sexual misconduct, that'd show a pattern of behavior across a span of years. I could see that sinking his nomination, particularly if there's some sort of objective evidence.

If the only evidence against him is her word versus his, and a witness confirms his version of events, it's pretty much a done deal that nothing will come of it.

and a misogynist. One example is his recent statements on the young woman in federal (I think ICE) custody who wanted an abortion. Kavanaugh didn't just say no: he wanted to keep restarting the clock on her application so the process would drag on past the time allowed for a legal abortion. Pure sadism, IMHO.
