Cuomo Campaign Shifts Blame for Inflammatory Flier about Cynthia Nixon to 'Constituency Representati

Source: The New York Times

ALBANY — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Democratic Party both acknowledge the existence of a false piece of campaign material that wrongly implied that his primary opponent, Cynthia Nixon, was anti-Semitic. They say it went to 7,000 households, and cost about $11,000. And they both say it was wrong.

Beyond that, there had been few details about who was responsible for the flier’s language, delivery and its timing, coming before Rosh Hashana and before Thursday’s primary.

“As we have said this mailer was a mistake and completely inappropriate,” the party’s executive director, Geoff Berman, said in a statement on Monday. “The party does not discuss internal processes but we take this matter very seriously and are putting rigorous controls in place to ensure it never happens again.”

On Tuesday, the Cuomo campaign released a bit more about the mailer’s origins, identifying the creator only as “an individual helping the campaign on constituency outreach.”

campaigns as professional as Cuomo’s don’t, in my opinion, make “mistakes” like this.

First, it's a horrible thing to do. Second, she's already DOA in the race, so there's no reason for it.

...his campaign didn't make mistakes like that. It's still unclear who exactly did it and apparently no one from the campaign approved the mailer.

From your article:

Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat seeking a third term, has denied knowing anything about the mailer.

He characterized the mailer as a “mistake” and “inappropriate,” and said on Sunday that he had told “the state party that they better figure out how this happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

I'll wait before I condemn Cuomo or his campaign.

If the Mailer thought that this was a good ideal... The individual is not part of the Party, the individual is hindering it.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he was blindsided by an “inappropriate” political mailer tying Cynthia Nixon to anti-Semitism — but just a day before the inflammatory literature surfaced, one of his top campaign aides pitched a story about the primary challenger’s opposition to Israeli settlements.

The attempt to tar the former “Sex and the City” star over the divisive issue was made in an email to a Post reporter that casts doubt about Cuomo’s repeated claims he had nothing to do with the 11th-hour hit job.

The smoking-gun email, sent Friday afternoon from an official “andrewcuomo.com” account, suggested that The Post publish a story about Nixon’s support of the pro-Palestinian “Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions” movement against Israel.

“Nixon has supported insidious BDS campaign, signing onto letter boycotting Israel,” it says.

I really have to wonder why the campaign felt the need to shore up their conservative Jewish support if they thought the Primary was going well...
