Far-right presidential hopeful aims to be Brazil's Trump
Anthony Boadle
BRASILIA (Reuters) - He is anti-gay, pro-gun and warns that China is taking over Brazil. And with one year to go before Brazils presidential election, right-wing Congressman Jair Bolsonaro is running second in opinion polls.
Bolsonaro, a 62-year-old former paratrooper, lacks a major party behind him but hopes to emulate Donald Trumps unexpected rise to the U.S. presidency with the support of Brazilians fed up with corrupt politicians and bad government.
Trump faced the same attacks I am facing - that he was a homophobe, a fascist, a racist, a Nazi - but the people believed in his platform, and I was rooting for him, Bolsonaro told Reuters in an interview this week in his office in Brasilia, decorated with the portraits of five military presidents from Brazils 1964-1985 dictatorship.
. . .
Bolsonaro is appealing a conviction for inciting violence after he told a female congresswoman on the floor of the lower house that he would not rape her because she did not deserve it.

Imminent Danger: Right-wing Extremist Jair Bolsonaro Leads Predictions for Presidential Elections
Despite the massive protests against the attacks on human rights and democracy, the prospects for the upcoming presidential election are more than gloomy. After Lulas arrest in April of this year, ex-military Jair Bolsonaro is now leading the election forecasts. The former captain defends torture and military dictatorship. Due to his discriminatory statements against quilombolas [descendants of enslaved persons that escaped from plantations], indigenous people and refugees, he was charged with racism at the Federal Court of Justice (STF). Nevertheless, he has currently accumulated almost 25% of the votes in the election forecasts. The prospects for women, black and persons of colour, Indigenous and LGBTIQ are not only bleak, but seem almost hopeless in the event of the triumph of the Donald Trump of the Tropics, as the Guardian has euphemistically described Bolsonaro.

Jair Messias Bolsonaro (born 21 March 1955) is a Brazilian politician and former military officer. He has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 1991, and is currently a member of the Social Liberal Party (PSL). A highly controversial figure in Brazil, he is known for his far-right and populist political views, including sympathetic comments about Brazil's 19641985 military dictatorship.
. . .
Jair Bolsonaro is known for his strong opposition to left-wing policies. Most notably, he has been a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage,[22] abortion,[23] affirmative action (particularly racial quotas),[24] immigration[25] (particularly refugees from Haiti, Africa and the Middle East, whom he once called "the scum of humanity" ),[19] drug liberalization,[26] land reforms,[27] and secularism at the state level,[26] among other things.[28]
He has also made statements in defense of the Brazilian military regime[29] (a dictatorship known for constant human rights violations).[30] He claims that torture is a "legitimate practice" and says that he would change the Brazilian penal code and would try to pass new legislation regarding the introduction of life imprisonment and capital punishment (which is currently banned under the Brazilian Constitution of 1988).[31] Bolsonaro supports the privatization of state owned companies and advocates for pro-free market policies,[32] although critics have stated that his policy-making record doesn't in fact show him to be a supporter of economic liberalism.[33]
In a 2017 interview with journalist Claudio Dantas Sequeira from O Antagonista, Bolsonaro said that despite the "left-leaning media frenzy" against him, his views are actually directly aligned with centrist to right-wing US citizens' views on gun ownership, abortion, gender politics, and trade. Bolsonaro reiterated that he intends to reverse some disarmament laws, improve public security, and also improve trade ties with the United States, which he said were broken during Lula da Silva's and Dilma Rousseff's administrations.[34]

JUIZ DE FORA, Brazil (Reuters) - The leading candidate in Brazils presidential election is in serious but stable condition after being stabbed by an assailant at a campaign rally on Thursday, doctors said, pushing an already chaotic campaign into further disarray.
Far-right firebrand Congressman Jair Bolsonaro, a controversial figure who has enraged many Brazilians for years with divisive comments, but has a devout following among conservative voters, could take two months to fully recover and will spend at least a week in the hospital, said Dr. Luiz Henrique Borsato, who operated on the candidate.
. . .
He has openly praised Brazils military dictatorship and in the past said it should have killed more people.
In casting his vote on the floor of Congress for the 2016 impeachment of former President Dilma Rousseff, he dedicated his ballot to the military regime figure who oversaw the prison where Rousseff was jailed for three years and brutally tortured.

The wounding of a leading Brazilian presidential candidate has the potential to reshape the election contest after dramatically exposing the deep polarization in Latin America's largest nation.
Far-right congressman Jair Bolsonaro, a former army captain who has promised to crack down on crime, has long argued that Brazil is in chaos and needs a strong hand to be steadied.
. . .
Instead, Bolsonaro, despite being a congressman since 1991, has harnessed much of the anger and presented himself as a maverick who will clean up a corrupt system. He also promises to confront a surge in crime, in part by giving police a freer hand to shoot and kill while on duty.
. . .
He speaks nostalgically about the country's 1964-1985 military dictatorship and has promised to fill his government with current and former military leaders. His vice presidential running mate is a retired general.

Jair Bolsonaro, who has been seriously injured in a knife attack while campaigning to become Brazil's next president is a polarising figure in an unpredictable election campaign.
He has praised Pinochet, expressed support for torturers and called for political opponents to be shot, earning him the label of the most misogynistic, hateful elected official in the democratic world.
. . .
He paints himself as a tropical Trump: a pro-gun, anti-establishment crusader set on draining the swamp into which Brazils futuristic capital has sunk.
. . .
On the stump and broadcasting to his 5 million Facebook followers he lambasts not slimeballs and bad hombres, but vagabundos (losers), canalhas (creeps) and bandidos (crooks).
