Russia’s government has accused the US of meddling in the country’s affairs by attempting to recruit Russian citizens as agents for American security services.

Dmitry Peskov, president Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, was responding to a press question regarding a report in the New York Times that said Oleg Deripaska, a Russian metals tycoon with links to the Kremlin, had been approached by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and US Justice Department seeking to recruit him as an informant.

“Such reports make you think about many things, but at the same time this is what is an obvious fact of practice on the part of the United States,” Mr Peskov told reporters on Monday. “The fact is that the United States in recent years is working crudely using its intelligence services, trying to recruit Russian citizens, exerting moral and other pressure on them.”

“I think these incidents in the most eloquent manner testify to the attempts to interfere in Russia’s internal affairs” he added.
