PHARR, Tex. On paper, hes a devoted U.S. citizen.
His official American birth certificate shows he was delivered by a midwife in Brownsville, at the southern tip of Texas. He spent his life wearing American uniforms: three years as a private in the Army, then as a cadet in the Border Patrol and now as a state prison guard. But when Juan, 40, applied to renew his U.S. passport this year, the governments response floored him. In a letter, the State Department said it didnt believe he was an American citizen.
As he would later learn, Juan is one of a growing number of people whose official birth records show they were born in the United States but who are now being denied passports their citizenship suddenly thrown into question. The Trump administration is accusing hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Hispanics along the border of using fraudulent birth certificates since they were babies, and it is undertaking a widespread crackdown on their citizenship.
In a statement, the State Department said that it has not changed policy or practice regarding the adjudication of passport applications, adding that the U.S.-Mexico border region happens to be an area of the country where there has been a significant incidence of citizenship fraud.

(6,831 posts)What is the purpose of this depraved nonsense ? Lawsuits will go to court. People will be proved to be citizens. They will win the right to renew their passports. And the taxpayers will have to shoulder the burden for all of this.
Who is behind this stupidity ? Sounds like another heavy-handed move by Stephen Miller.
What (or who) is next ?

(19,204 posts)had a lot to do with it as well. As much as Trump says he has no confidence in Sessions, he and "Jeffie" are two peas in a pod when it comes to denying the rights of black and brown-skinned people.
These loathsome jerkoffs don't even come close to resembling human beings. They're fucking animals.

(6,831 posts)Passports are the property of the U S Department of State, not Justice, so little Jeffy's tiny elf fingers really don't have the jurisdictional reach. And I doubt Pompeo would tolerate Sessions slithering onto policy in his domain.

(19,204 posts)"Jeffie" is probably in on the decisions to deny minorities their rights, not in charge of implementing those decisions. Trump looks for all the ass-kissers he can find when making decisions. Anyone who won't kiss his ass is left out of the loop.

(45,457 posts)So the administration that lies about everything is lying about people's documents. Anyone who isn't white, must have fake documents. Whiteness means born in America.
Why don't they go though the rural Trump areas and ask the whites living there for birth certificates. I want to see how many have them.

(12,022 posts)none of it will protect you from being deported.
How, exactly, are you supposed to prove where you were born if your birth certificate isn't good enough?

(6,831 posts)If they want you gone, nothing will stop them. Unless you've got enough $$$ to hire the best attorneys out there in time to forestall your departure.
