Trump Gives Canada Until Friday to Agree to New NAFTA Deal

Source: The Daily Beast

Top trade negotiators for the United States have stressed to Canada that a new NAFTA deal has to be signed by this Friday, or else. Bloomberg News reports Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland has arrived in Washington, D.C. in an attempt to smooth over the problems between her country and the Trump administration. She’s due to meet U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer again Wednesday morning following talks Tuesday night. The Trump White House has made it clear that the deadline for an agreement in principle is Friday, with what Bloomberg called “no wiggle room.” There has been progress between the U.S. and Mexico, but Canada still has key issues—mainly on dispute-resolution systems—that it hasn’t reached an agreement on. President Trump has threatened to tax Canada’s auto sector or cut it out entirely if a deal is not reached.

Canadians can stand on principle, or potentially go into recession.

Me thinks they will cave.

Canada cannot go tit for tat against an economy 10x the size. Some Trumpist economy advisor was on a Canadian radio talk show here and basicaly said as much. Trump is prepared to allow Americans and companies to suffer and play a waiting game until Canada comes crawling back and signs a deal vastly unfair to Canada.

But what does the US get out of bullying their long time ally and peaceful neighbour into a "deal"? The biggest bully on the block gets a kind of respect I guess. For a while. Those around him fear him, and others hate him. Long term, you get more with honey than vinegar. There will come a time when other countries will band together against the bully state. And then Americans will suffer more. Its a stupid archaic way to 'win' by getting someone elses lunch money.

Trudeau is making noises like "no deal is better than a bad deal" - but he's already said that a deal by Friday is possible.

Stupid orange assmouth thinks he has 100% control over these issues and Congress has no part to play - he is wrong. Congress has to approve the deal or there is no new deal. He is not a dictator (yet) and hopefully these idiot russian repugs in Congress would actually stand up to him on this, especially states on our northern border - like WI and MI - 2 states that determined drumpfs so-called win.
