Exclusive poll: Americans believe Cohen, don't want impeachment

Source: Axios

Almost two thirds of Americans believe Michael Cohen's claim that President Trump ordered him to make illegal payments to two women to keep them quiet about his affairs — but less than half of Americans believe Congress should start impeachment proceedings, according to a new Axios/SurveyMonkey poll.

Why it matters: Republicans believe it's those payments, which would have violated campaign finance law, that put Trump in the greatest danger of impeachment if Democrats win the House in November. The poll shows that the majority of Americans, including about half of independents, aren't ready for that.

Between the lines: Axios and SurveyMonkey are tracking opinions on key issues among five key voter subgroups between now and the November elections. Here's what we found in the poll, taken right after Cohen implicated Trump last week:
* Three key subgroups — white suburban women, "Never Hillary" independents, and rural voters — are strongly against impeachment.
* Two subgroups — Millennials and African American women — strongly favor it.
* However, every subgroup believes Cohen about the illegal payments. The numbers suggest that many Americans just aren't bothered about it to demand impeachment proceedings.
*Americans are more divided about whether Trump's campaign colluded with the Russian government to swing the 2016 presidential election to him. Millennials and African American women believe it, rural voters and "Never Hillary independents" don't, and white suburban women are split.

In the meantime, Democrats would do well to motivate younger voters and AA women rather than tippy-toe around “never-Hillarys” and rural voters.

and we're seeing it again. Americans don't want their President thrown out because they're adulterers. Now if Mueller's report comes out and proves conspiracy with the russians, these numbers will change but until then, stop talking about impeachment - it's poison.

The title is wrong. The poll isn't about whether impeachment is "wanted." It's whether it should be "started."

I don't think we should START the proceedings till there's a good chance we can win conviction -- and that means about half the Republicans in the Senate would have to vote to convict. We aren't even close to that yet.

Hopefully, the release of Robert Mueller's findings will bring us much closer.

(P.S. Possibly the worst thing that could happen right after the election would be for the R's to have a very fast impeachment proceeding. to narrowly vote to impeach -- and then to have conviction lose in the Senate. I'm afraid that that could inoculate DT against any further impeachment proceedings, at least on the same charges..

We need to be patient and strategic.)

And so, even though they know he is a criminal, a cheater, a liar, a boor, it makes no difference to their support. And impeachment is not only something they would never consider, but something they would virulently oppose. Even IF Mueller charged him with downright treason.

So that 40 something percent knows in their hearts that Trump has done more than enough to be impeached (especially if he were a Democrat) but they just do not care. He, and so they, are winning. More good paying jobs coming for white people just around the corner, believe him.

Steve Kronacki (I am sure I am misspelling) was on Brian Williams talking about his book about politics of the 90s. While the majorly agreed that Clinton perjured himself, most were against impeaching. Further, Bill’s approval continue to rise and in 1998, instead of the party in control of the White House losing seats in midterm elections, it won seats.

Yes I am sure there many men cheering him for getting a young woman and, no doubt, there are many now cheering Trump for “sticking it” to the etablishment.
