A Tennessee man allegedly wrote a jailhouse letter to a white supremacist group admitting he burned a black man alive and cited the Bible as one of his influences.
Nashvilles WTVF reported Monday that John Daniel Carothers, accused of murdering his black halfway house roommate Robert Miller in March, claimed the Bible is for white people and referenced the religious text in his alleged confession letter.
I believe the Bible is about white people and for white people, Carothers jailhouse letter read. I am in the Rutherford County Jail for burning a black man I set on fire with lighter fluid poured on his head.
After the sheriffs department found the suspects apparent confession letter in the outgoing mail, prosecutors are now considering upping the charges against him using a hate crime enhancement.

(49,047 posts)With Capital Punishment, there is a short episode where you are sedated or made unconscious first and then you die.
That pales in comparison to staring at decades of loss of freedom during which your crime will recur in your thoughts thousands of times.

(57,343 posts)Project doesn't work anywhere as many life sentences as they do capital crimes and I understand completely why.
I think sentences much over 20 years are useless and offer no chance for a prisoner to turn it around.

(57,343 posts)though some states have addressed the predatory prison phone pricing. Over-sentencing, three-strike laws and mndatory sentencing have all got to go. Taking dads and moms needlessly out of homes adds to the poverty cycle on a bunch of levels.

Which leads to another major reform needed in corrections: get rid of private company run.owned prisons where there is a profit incentive to keep people incarcerated. Our county formed a partnership with a private company to build the jail. They gave the sheriff a bounty to keep heads on beds. This meant that we had prisoners from as far as Florida there. Their families were poor and these prisoners all had sentences of less than a year.
And while we're at it, sheriffs in the Deep South need to be reigned in.
Don't get me started. A lot of criminals wear a star, a cowboy hat and a handgun.
Interestingly enough our town cops are pretty darn good.

(14,496 posts)In many, many cases the family is left behind with little or no income. Because prisoners make little or no money, families feel obligated to contribute to the prisoner's money account so he/she can buy extra food or commissary basics. And, they are put on a guilt trip if they don't accept those extremely expensive phone calls.
I could rant for hours over the cruelty of our jails and prisons (particularly relating to medical care), but I'm working on keeping my BP down, LOL. I worked with some men in prison for several years and had one die in an Indiana prison, so the psychological and economic effects are quite widespread, not just for family.

Just outside 10 hours a day digging holes and filling them back up. Nothing real is being done. So there is no sense of personal accomplishment. I've been told that considered torture, though. Sooo, there's that.

(1,204 posts)Not just because it would be illegal either. I was making that comment as emotionally based thought for people who commit heinous crimes. If I was actually making policy or had any sway, then my approach would likely be more rational...it wouldn't only be like 5 hours a days. I'm kidding.
I find it a lot easier to discuss criminal justice reform ideas when discussing non-violent criminals. So, I really don't have any great ideas how best to deal with folks like this guy.

(4,066 posts)I'm from TN originally. This does not surprise me. Of course there is not hate crime statute in TN. It's still very much okay to hate people based on color of their skin there.
There is not a specific Hate Crime law in Tennessee, but Jones said he could pursue a hate crime enhancement if Carothers is found guilty at trial which would bring harsher sentencing.

It was good to see it mentioned that the U.S. Attorney can step in to do the job in this case, if Trump wouldn't prohibit it.

Draw them in with a cover showing Jesus holding two gigantic blue-steel six-shooters, but then have him never actually use them in the book. Instead, he overcomes all his challenges with peace, love, understanding, and tolerance.
The cognitive dissonance would give them some wicked headaches.
