White House officials again lowered the American flag atop the building to half-staff Monday afternoon after intense criticism of the administration's response to Sen. John McCain's death, and bipartisan calls from Congress to lower the flag.
"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment," Trump wrote, breaking his two-day silence on the Arizona senator's life.
The president also said he had requested that Vice President Pence speak at Capitol Hill services honoring McCain on Friday, and Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Ambassador John Bolton to represent his administration at the funeral. And he said he had authorized military assistance for the funeral and burial. Trump was not invited to the funeral. former president Barack Obama and George W. Bush are scheduled to deliver eulogies.
The move Monday afternoon came after White House officials had raised the flag to full-staff earlier in the day, and Trump ignored almost a dozen shouted questions about McCain while White House staffers convulsed over his reaction.

I don't who did it (maybe Ivanka) but someone got to him. He was being obstinate.
Original article and title -
BREAKING: After flying at half-staff for barely a day in tribute to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), U.S. flags at the White House and many other federal properties were raised Monday morning, sparking criticism that President Trump was not properly honoring the senator.
He reversed that decision Monday afternoon.
"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment," Trump said in a statement.

Nat'l Cmdr Denise Rohan sent the following letter to President Trump, urging the White House to issue a proclamation keeping the US flag at half staff through his internment of Sen. #JohnMcCain:
Dear President Trump,
The American Legion urges the White House to follow long-established protocol following the death of prominent government officials.
Mr. President, just this year, you released presidential proclamations noting the deaths of Barbara Bush and Billy Graham. Senator John McCain was an American hero and cherished member of The American Legion. As I'm certain you are aware, he served five and a half years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam and retired from the U.S. Navy at the rank of Captain. He then served in the U.S. Congress for more than three decades.
On the behalf of The American Legion's two million wartime veterans, I strongly urge you to make an appropriate presidential proclamation noting Senator McCain's death and legacy of service to our nation, and that our nation's flag be half-staffed through his interment.
I look forward to your response.
Denise Rohan

(3,193 posts)Just not in this instance. He was being sincere(ly awful) when he mocked McCain for having been a POW. That's what he really thought. The positive comments were purely for optics.
As a rule, whenever Dolt 45 says something crass, classless, vulgar, rude, boorish, hateful, or oafish, that's him being sincere.
Whenever he says something thoughtful or classy, it's because someone else actually wrote it and he's mouthing the words because he has to, for whatever reason.
He's just a wad of garbage stuffed into an ill-fitting suit, with an overlong tie hanging below the dead hamster perched on his empty noggin.

(3,193 posts)I can almost forgive falling for it at the beginning. Hell, I was hoping he'd surprise us all and be halfway decent as President.
What I don't get is how they can keep supporting him after seeing him lurch from one disaster to the next. He fucks up everything he touches.

The other 75% he's spent working hard at being the most godawful excuse for a President the country has ever known. He gets up early and he doesn't go to bed until he's made a lot of very poor decisions.

President Trump nixed issuing a statement that praised the heroism and life of Sen. John McCain, telling senior aides he preferred to issue a tweet before posting one Saturday night that did not include any kind words for the late Arizona Republican.
Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Chief of Staff John F. Kelly and other White House aides advocated for an official statement that gave the decorated Vietnam War POW plaudits for his military and Senate service and called him a hero, according to current and former White House aides, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal deliberations. The original statement was drafted before McCain died Saturday, and Sanders and others edited a final version this weekend that was ready for the president, the aides said.
But Trump told aides he wanted to post a brief tweet instead, and the statement praising McCains life was not released.

That linked article's "statement" would have been part of an official "proclamation" and he refused to do it until now.
