Mollie Tibbetts's father thanks Latino community for help in search for her

Source: The Hill

The father of Mollie Tibbetts, the Iowa college student who was allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant, thanked the local Hispanic community on Sunday for the support they offered while he searched for his daughter.

"The Hispanic community are Iowans. They have the same values as Iowans," Rob Tibbetts said while delivering a eulogy for his daughter during her funeral, according to The Des Moines Register.

"As far as I'm concerned, they're Iowans with better food."

Rob Tibbetts made the comments a little over a month after Mollie Tibbetts, 20, went missing. Her body was found last Tuesday, and Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, is charged with murder in her death.

They really exhibit grace under pressure. And they're eloquent.

Someone thought it was relevant enough to substitute a word he did not use for the word he did use.

Although, to be fair, a lot of people don't make the distinction.

I worked with someone who was adopted. As an adult she traced her biological mother to find out where she came from. After meeting with her biological family she told me that she had to look up the difference between Hispanic and Latino. She had lived 35 years as one but didn't know the difference.

Tibbetts’ father: Hispanic locals ‘Iowans with better food’

The killing of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts has prompted criticism of the U.S. immigration system because the man charged in her death is a Mexican farmworker. But the victim’s father told mourners he’s been embraced by the local Hispanic communit

Seems easy enough to get the quote right - I agree with you about lazy journalism on the part of The Hill.

Unless they deliberately changed the word for some reason.

Were there Brazilians helping to find her?

The two words don't reference the same thing, you know.

I'm just curious as to why they would have not said Hispanic in the headline since that is what he actually said.

Latinos include speakers of Portuguese.

Eta the reason they changed it was to be more inclusive, even though it's unlikely that there are many Brazilians living in Iowa.

He never said Latino - he said Hispanic.

Also, Latinx is being used in place of Latino these days to be more gender inclusive. So if The Hill wanted to substitute a different word then maybe that would have been a better one to use.

“We reclaim our Mollie,” Tibbetts’s cousin wrote on Facebook.
By Anna North Aug 27, 2018, 1:10pm EDT

When 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts was found dead near her Iowa hometown, President Donald Trump quickly seized on the tragedy as a political talking point. The reason: The man charged with her murder, Cristhian Bahena Rivera, may be an unauthorized immigrant.

Now, a member of Tibbetts’s family is pushing back on Trump’s narrative. Rivera’s immigration status is irrelevant, Tibbetts’s cousin Sandi Tibbetts Murphy wrote in a Facebook post on Friday. “He could have been a citizen, born in this country; he could have been an older, white man from anywhere; he could have been a man from Mollie’s world.”

What really matters, Murphy argues, are the apparent circumstances of Tibbetts’s death: “Mollie was murdered because a man denied her right to say no.”

For Murphy, the tragedy isn’t about the supposed dangers of illegal immigrants, as Trump has claimed. Instead, it’s about toxic masculinity.
