U.S. and Mexico Agree to Preliminary Nafta Deal

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — The United States and Mexico have reached agreement to revise key portions of the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement and a preliminary deal could be announced on Monday, a crucial step toward revamping a trade pact that has appeared on the brink of collapse during the past year of negotiations.

Reaching an agreement on how to revise some of the most contentious portions of what President Trump has long called the worst trade pact in history would give Mr. Trump a significant win in a trade war he has started with countries around the globe, including Mexico, Canada, the European Union and China.

Still, a preliminary agreement between the United States and Mexico would fall far short of actually revising Nafta. The preliminary agreement still excludes Canada, which is also a party to Nafta but has been absent from talks held in Washington in recent weeks.

The agreement with Mexico centers on rules governing the automobile industry, resolving a big source of friction, but leaves aside other contentious issues that affect all three countries.

A preliminary deal is not a permanent deal and this pre-agreement is with a lame duck administration. A left wing, anti-Trump administration gets sworn in this December.

A preliminary deal with a lame duck Mexican administration of the opposing party doesn't mean shit.

Pence has insisted on. I don’t think there’s any huge hurdles for Canada there. Other than not wanting Trump to have a “win.”

And The Dems will vote for it if the news is accurate about the proposed changes. Trump and the GOP would hang us out to dry in the Midwest if they can blame us for blocking a good, jobs positive trade agreement.

We HAVE to win Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ohio to win a Presidential election.

Trump can use it for the 2018 midterms. brag about this 'historic' new deal where "the US did very very good, believe me..."

And the outgoing, more rightwing corrupt Mexican President, or his party at least, can also promote it in their news as something terrific for Mexicans, so when the new left leaning government comes in and balks at the predictable anti-labor and anti-environmental provisions as well as an unfair advantage to corporations being able to sue governments for loss of profits if they dare enact some environmental or labor or even some other social spending that the corporate class thinks will hit their bottom line, the outgoing party can slam the new left President with being anti-business, anti-trade etc..

He'll try to put lipstick on this pig as some sort of major accomplishment, but all he did was re-stack a couple of the bricks he kicked over from the last agreement.

To qualify for zero tariffs under Nafta, car companies would be required to manufacture at least 75 percent of an automobile’s value in North America under the new rules, up from 62.5 percent previously. They will also be required to use more local steel, aluminum and auto parts, and have 40 percent to 45 percent of the car made by workers earning at least $16 an hour, a boon to both the United States and Canada.

I don't know how many cars currently have between 62.5% and 75% value 'manufactured' in North America at the moment.

NAFTA 12:27 P.M.
By Benjamin Hart@realaxelfoley

After months of painstaking negotiations that often seemed on the verge of collapse, the United States and Mexico reached a bilateral deal on Monday that would rewrite key portions of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the landmark 1994 pact that President Trump attacked relentlessly on the campaign trail and has continued to rail against during his presidency. The big question now is whether Canada, the third party to the original deal, will come onboard.

During an Oval Office briefing with reporters, Trump awkwardly spoke with Mexican president on speaker-phone, hailing the new agreement as a breakthrough. He also said that he would be “terminating” NAFTA, and that the name of the new deal would be the the U.S.-Mexico Trade Agreement. He then threatened Canada with new tariffs on cars if it didn’t come to a trade agreement with with the U.S., which he said could be bilateral.

Behind the scenes, though, the Trump administration is attempting to get Canada to sign off on a trilateral deal, and Trump’s words could be viewed as a threat for Canada to get onboard as quickly as possible.

With Canadian-U.S.relations at a low after Trump assailed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in June, the country has withdrawn itself from NAFTA talks in recent weeks.

....that trump "negotiated" with North Korea? How are they working out?

And along with it being "preliminary", it falls woefully short of addressing most of the trace issues between the two (three, if Canada is included) countries.

Day after day the "fun" just keeps coming. He tears things down without having a clue what "plan" he is going to use as a replacement. Oh, sure, he says he has a plan but so far NADA with anything he has tried. I'm really ticked right now because I had a great Medicare Advantage cost plan that the Federal Government just trashed. I have no clue yet what will replace it because they are "working on the replacement" and it won't be ready until October. I do know I will get less for more money. All this happened out of sight. Suddenly a letter from my insurance company arrives with the news. He had the audacity to call it Trump Medicare!

20. Donald Trump Thinks He Signed A Trade Deal -- He Didn't
Tue Aug 28, 2018, 11:33 AM

President Donald Trump needed a win this week and in true Trump fashion, he manufactured one. The President on Monday announced “one of the largest trade deals ever made” after his administration agreed, in kind, to a manufacturing agreement with Mexico.

Trump is so desperate for a win that he even claims this week that “we haven’t started with Canada yet.” That, despite the fact that U.S. officials, without Trump’s input, have been in talks to renegotiate NAFTA for more than a year.

The 45th POTUS wants us to believe a deal is all but complete while Mexico’s own president, Peña Nieto, mentioned several times during a speakerphone call to Donald Trump that he wants Canada involved before anything is finalized.

A spokesperson for Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland released this statement:

“We will only sign a new NAFTA that is good for Canada and good for the middle class. Canada’s signature is required.”

It’s possible that Nieto is attempting to rush through the process in the hopes of ratifying a deal before President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador takes office on Dec. 1.
