French President Emmanuel Macron told France's overseas ambassadors gathered in Paris on Monday that Europe can "no longer rely" upon the US for its security.
"It is up to us today to take our responsibilities and guarantee our own security, and thus have European sovereignty," Macron said.
Since his election in 2016, US President Donald Trump has been distancing himself from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, challenging a post-World War Two consensus on peace and security in Europe.
Macron said he wanted to see a complete rethink of how Europe defends itself in the future.
"I want us to launch an exhaustive review of our security with all Europe's partners, which includes Russia," he added...More..

Macron's call for greater European military cooperation echoes recent comments by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas who called last week for Europe to "take an equal share of the responsibility" and "form a counterweight" to Washington as Europe-US relations cool, AFP reported.

...which is what every leader of every country at any time in history should have as a goal. Anything else is irresponsible.

(13,603 posts)The purpose of alliances is to present a better defense against a larger adversary. NATO members, by themselves, are no match for russia's aggression. Putin's dream is recreating and expanding the USSR. Unfortunately, putin's dream is being fostered by our fake president who, himself, is a putin asset. It is actually in our best interest to maintain and guarantee the security of Europe through NATO.

On the other hand having a nuclear arsenal is the ultimate contingency plan.

(6,556 posts)has been a founding member of NATO that was established in 1949. NATO is an association of European and North American countries, formed in 1949 for the defense of Europe and the North Atlantic against the perceived threat of Soviet aggression. By 2005, the alliance consisted of 26 countries, including several eastern European nations. NATO's purpose is to safeguard member countries by political and military means.
It was formed because no one small country can defend itself against Russia, and Crimea has proven the threat still exist. tRump has thrown our long time allies under the Russian bus, along with multiple other decisions to take down our nations. We need to tread carefully when we follow tRump and his goals, in my opinion.
