McCain endured more than five years of imprisonment and torture by the North Vietnamese as a young Navy pilot. He went on to battle foes on the left and the right in the marble corridors of Washington.
A Republican who seemed his truest self when outraged, he reveled in opposing orthodoxy and spent decades representing Arizona in the Senate. He twice ran unsuccessfully for president. McCain was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July 2017.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

(11,522 posts)I'm sure Pres. Obama will, with the eloquence that very few posses, will express appreciation for Senator McCain's service to our country during the Vietnam war and after and show the deepest respect to Senator McCain's family.
Spanky, on the other hand, will attempt to make Senator McCain's passing all about Spanky. Hopefully someone in the White House can keep Spanky away from his twitter machine for a few days so he won't embarrass our country any more than he already has.

John McCain, a giant of the Senate who survived years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam to become a leading actor on the political stage for decades, died Saturday at the age of 81.
McCains death from brain cancer came more than a year after he announced he had the condition in July of 2017.
His family announced Friday that he had chosen to discontinue medical treatment for an aggressive gioblastoma because the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age had rendered their verdict.
The news prompted an outpouring of tribute and sympathy from Republicans and Democrats alike, a testament to the respect McCain built among colleagues in both parties despite his habit of calling them out during clashes over politics and policy.

May ride at anchor for a little space
And then, some starless night, the cable slips,
Leaving an eddy at the mooring place .

(5,493 posts)Which is something THAT CANNOT be said about the current traitor occupying the WH.
The bad part about this is Gov. Doug DOUCHEBAG gets to appoint an interim Senator. It could be any piece of shit from convicted criminal Sheriff Jerk off to Chemtrail Kelli.

(57,204 posts)actually talked to them. I'll also remember him for running through fire on the Forestal to save a flyer trapped in his jet while ordenece was going off around them sustaining 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Anyone serving in the right place could have been a POW, but being a hero takes something more. And then he set a hero's standard for being a POW by refusing an early release.
A uniquely American man.

(63 posts)I am a yellow dog Democrat from a long line of progressives but my father was a Naval officer and my life was defined by my early experiences. My brother flew F-4s in two tours in VietNam (which nearly split our family even then). then,my mother died of brain cancer, too. So, John McCain was a complicated man who was not my choice for any post, but I see the common thread woven between peoples' lives and I am so sorry he was so ill at the end; he had paid his dues long ago. Go back to the wild blue yonder, young man!

(16 posts)Thank you , for many things. For your military service. Your service in the Senate. For caring about bipartisanship. For pushing back against the fake president. For the thumbs down. For saying your opponent was a good man. We needed more people like you on the other side to keep our government civil. It's a tough loss for America.

(1,068 posts)I stand and salute, with the lone bugler sounding The Last Post.
We honor the memory of a dying breed in our country, who lay down their life, that others will live. Yes he was held captive for a period of time. On that day when he was released, when the war that this nation wanted to forget ended.....his life and liberty were restored. His campaign to change America might have failed, but he succeeded in making his mark on America. We will never forget his mempry.....Amen
