Animal crackers' animals "freed" as boxes get new look
August 20, 2018 photo shows box of Nabisco Barnum's Animals crackers on shelf of grocery store in Des Moines, Iowa, with newly designed packaging CHARLIE NEIBERGALL / AP
After more than a century behind bars, the beasts on boxes of animal crackers are roaming free. ... Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco, has redesigned the packaging of its Barnum's Animals crackers after relenting to pressure from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
PETA, which has been protesting the use of animals in circuses for more than 30 years, wrote a letter to Mondelez in the spring of 2016 calling for a redesign.
"Given the egregious cruelty inherent in circuses that use animals and the public's swelling opposition to the exploitation of animals used for entertainment, we urge Nabisco to update its packaging in order to show animals who are free to roam in their natural habitats," PETA said in its letter. ... Mondelez agreed and started working on a redesign. In the meantime, the crackers' namesake circus - Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey - folded for good. The 146-year-old circus, which had removed elephants from its shows in 2016 because of pressure from PETA and others, closed down in May 2017 due to slow ticket sales.
....
The company won't say how many boxes it sells each year. Canadian boxes already had a different design and aren't affected.

LBN? I think so. This is a big change in thinking. Also, at the point at which we have arrived now in the U.S., I'll grasp at any straw I can.
I had to right click on "Inspect" to retrieve the address for that .jpg.
How long have those things been called "Barnum's Animals"? I thought they were called "Animal Crackers." I guess I'm not in the target market.
Take it away, Wikipedia:

Animal biscuit cookies were made and distributed under the National Biscuit Company banner. In 1902, animal crackers officially became known as "Barnum's Animals" and evoked the familiar circus theme of the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Later in 1902, the now-familiar box was designed for the Christmas season with the innovative idea of attaching a string to hang from the Christmas tree. Until that time, crackers were generally sold only in bulk ( the proverbial "cracker barrel" ) or in large tins. These small cartons, which retailed for 5 cents at the time of their release, were a big hit and are still sold today.
The old boxes had baby animals too. Why not now? I see that the viewer was inside the cage, with the animals, as there were no bars between the viewer and the animals.

(37,748 posts)Thankfully, no one else has even intimated as much.
But I certainly can understand your frustration at the lack of bars drawn onto a box of cookies.

(129,445 posts)mainly because the box used to have a string and I could "carry" the box around like a "pocketbook". lol
I think there are other brands out there with the generic name "animal crackers". There are even recipes to make your own, which I've done many times (they are graham-flour cookies) using animal cookie cutouts.

(129,445 posts)where such things seem to hide out (at least that's where my things of old are - although the "box" was upgraded to a plastic tote bin)!

(20,763 posts)Theoretically, you could cut around the portion on the bottom and unfold them so they were complete "wheels". And the little cotton handle could be detached at one end and used to pull the box like a toy.
