UPDATED: Pentagon may delay Trump's military parade, originally slated for November, to next year

Source: Washington Post

The Trump administration may delay a military parade slated for this fall, the Pentagon said Thursday, amid questions about the event's increasing cost.

Col. Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement that the parade, which President Trump ordered earlier this year as a tribute to American military might, could take place next year.

"The Department of Defense and White House have been planning a parade to honor America's military veterans and commemorate the centennial of World War I," Manning said. "We originally targeted November 10, 2018 for this event but have now agreed to explore opportunities in 2019."

Manning provided no reason for the apparent postponement, which came amid a spate of news reports that the event, which is expected to include aircraft, vehicles, period uniforms and symbols of U.S. power, could cost up to $92 million, far more than originally estimated.

Original article -

BREAKING: The Defense Department and the White House, which had targeted a November date for the Washington military parade sought by President Trump, will instead "explore opportunities in 2019," a Pentagon spokesman said in a statement.

This story will be updated.

A massive parade that President Trump ordered to showcase American military might this fall will probably cost tens of millions of dollars more than originally expected, officials said Thursday.

A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss cost estimates that have not been finalized, said the final tally could be as high as $92 million depending on what military assets are included. The price tag, much higher than previous estimates, was first reported by MSNBC.

The funds would have to stay within the Department of Defense. It could be used for training or for improving base facilities, to cite just two examples. The Department of Defense could not, however, hand the money to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Thanks for writing.

Seriously though, this parade it stupid, ridiculously expensive, and a slap in the face to the military.
I hope our Armed Forces stand up and refuse to do it. I hope our Congress will refuse to fund it.

Among other things, it's a slap in the face to our veterans.

It reminds me of the series, Washington Spies. There is a scene that shows us the origin of "red tape". It was a stack of military correspondence letters bundled with red tape/ribbon, denoting it is ready for delivery and not to be opened. I think it is akin to "top secret" and if you broke the "red tape" it was significant. Something like that anyway.

Instead of accompanying the article with a picture of T, they used an archival photo of a real president (albeit a Bush) with Gen. Shwarzkopf. Now wouldn't it be neat if news outlets never showed another picture of T again, but rather found archival photos of real presidents engaging in some related activity to the story at hand, to act as juxtaposition to and provide context for some stupid thing T does. Compare him to past presidents and never show his ugly orange kisser. Most dictators have to be visible to their adoring masses at every moment to retain their hold, as the acolytes' swollen amygdalas render them unsure whether the eyes in a picture might actually be watching them. We aren't at the ubiquitous posters and bigger-than-life statues stage in this nascent dictatorship yet, so maybe the press could do this to help slow that progression.

Pentagon delays Trump's veterans parade until at least 2019

https://www.yahoo.com/news/official-says-trumps-military-parade-cost-92m-181322586--politics.html

LOLITA C. BALDOR
,Associated Press•August 16, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Defense Department said Thursday that the Veterans Day military parade ordered up by President Donald Trump won't happen in 2018.

Col. Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, said the military and the White House "have now agreed to explore opportunities in 2019."

The announcement came several hours after The Associated Press reported that the parade would cost about $92 million, according to U.S. officials citing preliminary estimates more than three times the price first suggested by the White House.

According to the officials, roughly $50 million would cover Pentagon costs for aircraft, equipment, personnel and other support for the November parade in Washington. The remainder would be borne by other agencies and largely involve security costs. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss early planning estimates that have not yet been finalized or released publicly.

Officials said the plans had not yet been approved by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

The parade's cost has become a politically charged issue, particularly after the Pentagon canceled a major military exercise planned for August with South Korea, in the wake of Trump's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump said the drills were provocative and that dumping them would save the U.S. "a tremendous amount of money." The Pentagon later said the Korea drills would have cost $14 million.

Lt. Col. Jamie Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said earlier Thursday that Defense Department planning for the parade "continues and final details are still being developed. Any cost estimates are pre-decisional."

The parade was expected to include troops from all five armed services — the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard — as well as units in period uniforms representing earlier times in the nation's history. It also was expected to involve a number of military aircraft flyovers.

A Pentagon planning memo released in March said the parade would feature a "heavy air component," likely including older, vintage aircraft. It also said there would be "wheeled vehicles only, no tanks — consideration must be given to minimize damage to local infrastructure." Big, heavy tanks could tear up streets in the District of Columbia.

........................................................

One veterans group weighed in Thursday against the parade. "The American Legion appreciates that our President wants to show in a dramatic fashion our nation's support for our troops," National Commander Denise Rohan said. "However, until such time as we can celebrate victory in the War on Terrorism and bring our military home, we think the parade money would be better spent fully funding the Department of Veteran Affairs and giving our troops and their families the best care possible."....

and have celebrated "Armistice Day" (the original name of the holiday) or "Remembrance Day" or "Veterans Day" with commemorations and parades, literally for the last 99 years (next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the celebration of the original holiday). Wikipedia even had a pic from 100 years ago here in Philly in front of City Hall the day the armistice was signed in 1918!

In 1954 the name officially changed to Veterans Day.

There is no "snub". Here is a link to just a fraction of last year's events (mainly giving a sample of some of the largest ones including D.C. metro) - https://www.military.com/veterans-day/events.html

The mess that Drumpf wanted to have was to include an obscene "Soviet-style" show-of-military-might fiasco, which would have torn up the asphalt streets of D.C. if they did actually try to have tanks rolling down the streets (which had been nixed early on).
