Republicans Plan To Run Close To Trump. A New Poll Shows Why That's A Bad Idea.

Democrats can move swing voters by portraying Republicans as the presidents yes men, the survey shows.
Republicans have made clear they plan to run close to President Donald Trump in the campaign for Novembers midterm elections, believing his ability to energize the Republican base is the only way to offset a blue wave of enthusiastic Democratic voters.
A new poll from a coalition of Democratic groups casts doubt on that strategy, showing the GOP will suffer as campaigns center around the presidents personality and record, and Democrats portray Republicans as Trumps servants.
The survey of likely voters from Navigator Research, conducted by the Global Strategy Group, found Democrats had a 8-point lead on a generic ballot for Congress, 45 percent to 37 percent.
The Democratic lead grows, however, when the battle for Congress is framed as a referendum on the president. Asked if they would prefer a Democrat who mostly opposes Trump or a Republican who mostly supports him, 52 percent picked the Democrat, and 39 percent choose the Republican.
When presented with a Democrat who will be a check and balance on Trump against a Republican who will help Trump pass his agenda, Democrats led 50 percent to 38 percent.

Pete Stauber, the GOP nominee in Minnesotas 8th District, is one of the many Republicans who would love to campaign with Donald Trump in the fall.

(23,954 posts)i bet some we considered allies will notice which way the wind is blowing and re-align themselves in surprising ways to keep their jobs.
i just don't believe entrenched evil 50 years in the making gets unraveled with one or two elections. granted, Trumpco has thoroughly failed to consolidate power or gain majority public support, but i think Putin's gameplan is such that those steps, once standard in the dictator playbook, are deemed optional. this indicates a great deal of confidence on the part of certain individuals that our mechanisms of democracy have been completely compromised, and elections no longer reflect the will of the people.
at times, the midterm polls look fantastic, but i suspect they are rooted in a reality no longer relevant to our form of government. in August of 2016 the presidential polls looked fantastic -- i was 100% certain HRC was going to eat Trump's lunch. we all know what happened after that.
i don't say much about my doubts anymore, because i don't want to give up yet or discourage others who might have hope. but there's that little voice, in the back of my mind, saying the shit is far deeper than we're willing to admit, and the road back is long.

(12,213 posts)The GOP just doesn't appear concerned; and that's what McConnell and Ryan were like just before the 2016 election.
If the blue wave doesn't happen, it will be the ugliest period in U.S. history.

(6,556 posts)MSM has been pushing Pawlenty's defeat in the run for Minnesota governor position as his not being in tRump's pocket and Johnson was. If they had done an iota of research, they would be aware that most Minnesotans, both Democrats and Republicans, would not vote for T Paw because of the financial fiasco he left us holding. We had an educational system that had been starved by his using education budget funds for other pet projects (and did not pay back) and left a $2 billion deficit. Thanks to Mark Dayton (D), Minnesota is back on solid financial footing with a surplus. I can't believe Pawlenty thought that Minnesota would want him back. Just saying that in Minnesota, it was not "closeness to tRump" that defeated T Paw, it was his horrible mismanagement.
