Trump attacks Russia provisions in signed defense bill
Source: The Hill
President Trump said in a signing statement that he reserves the right to ignore a recently signed defense authorization laws ban on recognizing Russian sovereignty of Crimea.
The provision was just one of 50 Trump says infringes on his presidential authority.
In the signing statement issued Monday, the president objected to four of the eight provisions related to Russia. Included in the four is provision 1241, which states that none of the defense bills funds may be obligated or expended to implement any activity that recognizes the sovereignty of the Russian Federation over Crimea.

Trump also argued the bill would unjustly limit his presidential authority by restricting military-to-military cooperation with Russia and mandating he report to Congress if Russia violates the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty or if he discusses a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

(8,200 posts)It is just that damn simple. Turn out the vote for every seat up for reelection and elect a Democrat for each and every one. If we are unable to convince the majority of Democrats and Independents that the nation is a risk then we are lost. This is not limited to federal but for every office from city, state to federal. The real war begins on the local level where Democrats have not been very competitive.

There's much controversy regarding these however.

Foreign affairs has typically been judged to be executive-branch stuff. That whole "making of treaties" business. Or recognizing another country.

(7,403 posts)They are a defacto line item veto, which has been ruled as unconstitutional. 200 years ago they were used 1-2 times a year and here we have a book of signing statements in a single bill. Very bad.
