(108,221 posts)Planes were reportedly grounded at the SeaTac International Airport as reports flew from passengers on Twitter that someone might have stolen an airplane and taken it on an unauthorized flight.
Nothing was confirmed yet from authorities, but live aviation audio from the tower said authorities were urging a man to try to land that airplane safely and not hurt anybody. Other audio reported a ground stop was underway at SeaTac, the airport that services Seattle and Tacoma.

(1,204 posts)I don't think he lived, aye? I suppose we can be thankful that he didn't seem to be intent on hurting others.

(15,320 posts)It sounded like he didn't mean to. I also don't think he meant to hurt others. It's very sad.

(206,072 posts)An empty Horizon Airlines plane has crashed after it was stolen by a ground employee from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Friday around 8 p.m., according to local authorities and a senior federal aviation source.
North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled fighter jets to accompany the plane, which was steered away from Seattle and Tacoma by air traffic control, on its hour-long flight, according to the source. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department said the two F-15s were not involved in the crash.
The crash happened on Ketron Island, which is southwest of Tacoma, in south Puget Sound. The small island has only about 20 year-round residents.
The employee who stole the plane was 29 years old, from Pierce County and called "suicidal" by the sheriff's department. It clarified this was not a terrorist incident.

Flames could be seen on Ketron Island, Washington, where the stolen plane crashed late Friday, Aug. 10, 2018.

(206,072 posts)I can't imagine what his plans were - especially if he wasn't all that good at flying the plane.
"Most terrorists don't do loops over the water," Sheriff Paul Pastor said. "This might have been a joyride gone terribly wrong."

(1,204 posts)I don't know exactly where it all comes from or the backstory, but I do know the name Hyde is one of their things. This may not be the case, but you're right about being leery of the BS that pops up early.

Yeah, that's a troll he's pulling. That picture posted confirms it. It's all BS.

(67,782 posts)....and that was a twin-engine, which takes 100+ hours of experience to handle properly.
In my first flying lesson, with zero experience, I taxied to the runway and took off. But my instructor landed.

(788 posts)FAA website lists a Richard Huston Russell, of Kent, WA as a licensed A&P mechanic. Chances are, he knew how to start the plane, in order to taxi it from the maintenance hangar back to the terminal. Today was the day that he snapped, unfortunately.

(6,933 posts)Might have bent and dented a couple of things but with a pilot assisting him he could have done it,especially at a near by AFB that usually have runways that are nearly two miles long. He just didn't want to face the shit storm on the ground that would happen.
There was a Cessna employee working as a mechanic who took one of their smaller jets on a joy ride and didn't know how to fly the thing. He did a few trips around the airport and landed--blew a tire and tossed some debris into an engine but other than that the aircraft was fine.

(44,974 posts)He was suicidal, and it sounds like he did exactly what he set up to do, nosedive into the ground.

(1,077 posts)A licensed A&P mechanic would know how to move the plane around on the ground.
Have there been any reports of sonic booms over Oregon and Washington States within minutes of this incident going public. Something similar happened for interceptors heading for Pennsylvania on 9/11 from Langely.
Just read more of the above notes/comments, NORAD directed the F-15s. They did hot foot it into the area.
