Trump takes aim at Turkey, announcing doubling of steel and aluminum tariffs in effort to punish country

By Washington Post Staff

August 10 at 8:57 AM

President Trump earlier announced he would sanction two top Turkish officials over the country’s detainment of an American pastor. The new tariffs seek to inflict additional pain on Turkey, which is already suffering a swift economic descent as its currency stumbles.

“Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!” Trump tweeted.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

UPDATE:

By Damian Paletta

August 10 at 9:11 AM

President Trump on Friday said he told his administration to double the steel and aluminum tariffs against Turkey, reflecting the rapidly deteriorating state of relations between both countries.

The announcement would mark a major policy shift, but it was made in a Twitter post with little context. Trump remarked that Turkey’s currency, the Lira, was weakening against the U.S. dollar, a phenomenon that would make existing tariffs less impactful.

Doubling the tariffs to 20 percent for aluminum and 50 percent for steel would magnify the impact of the trade restrictions.

Trump’s move reflects a confluence of factors that have led to worsening relations between the White House and Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Treasury Department slapped sanctions on two Turkish officials last week because the country had refused to release American pastor Andrew Brunson, who faced charges in Turkey of espionage, among other things.

China...have lots of weapons to retaliate with. He is putting us in the cross hairs of massive weapons by striking out with his petty tariffs. We could be in for some hurt. He wants to tell the world what to do and may find out the world is bigger than him.

As per aluminum they are not in the top 15 countries that export aluminum into America.

This move might help the United States buy more steel from Russia.

To my surprise, they're still in business. I gather that the original fell out of favor, and this is a rerun.
