CNN's Brian Stelter airs clip of C-SPAN caller threatening to shoot him and Don Lemon
Source: The Hill
CNN media reporter Brian Stelter on Sunday aired a clip of a C-SPAN caller threatening to shoot him and fellow CNN anchor Don Lemon.
The caller, identified as Don, accused Stelter and Lemon of calling Trump supporters all racists, a claim Stelter immediately refuted.
They dont even know these Americans out here and they are calling us racists because we voted for Trump? Don said in the call on Friday. Come on. Give me a break. They started the war. I see them, Im going to shoot them.
Before airing the clip, Stelter noted that his colleagues and reporters at other networks get similar or worse threats, and noted that such calls and emails are coming in more often.

I feel awful for any reporter getting threats these days because the danger is real and getting closer to fruition.
I also think Don Lemon may be the biggest target because he's the darkest-skinned target. I hope CNN hires some bodyguards for their reporters.

(6,881 posts)Stelter seems to be trying very hard to defuse the hostile rhetoric. But, no, not all Trump supporters are racists. But after almost two years it's obvious, even to them, that Trump is. And to support him after that they are too.
Exactly what my hubs has been saying.
One little exception to your statement, "not all Trump supporters are racists."
I do not know even one Republican who is not a racist - even my otherwise sweet aunt Patsy, who'll never get to meet my son's s.o.

(6,881 posts)Trump's appeal is not ideological or logical but psychological. It is so much like what happened in Nazi Germany. That people, "civilized" people, who thought of themselves as decent and moral could commit the most heinous crimes, crimes that no "uncivilized" native would ever imagine, and justify themselves as heroes, doing something good. Who project their worse demons onto an enemy who they feel it is their moral duty to wipe off the face of the earth.
You're absolutely right - it is psychological.
And this is what happened more recently in Croatia, Serbia, and Kosovo in the '90s. The Balkans War was mainly about religious divisions that had stayed latent in Yugoslavia for generations.
If we have a civil war, it's going to be that kind of Civil War - Neighbors killing neighbors.

(6,881 posts)The word comes from the root "born". Historically there has always been an ethnic or racial undertone. Americans commonly think in terms of patriotism instead.
America to its credit has embraced diversity. It's what sets it apart and what really makes it great. But there are major exceptions. There is a really interesting study recently comparing different countries on how they view diversity. The difference with Europe is striking and also how the difference among Americans themselves pretty much coincides with Trump's supporters.

(28,125 posts)Much info that I was unaware of.
When we lived in England in the late 80s and early 90s, I noticed great diversity in London and in University cities, as you would imagine. But much less so among small villages and in blue-collar cities, along with less tolerance. Same as here.

(6,881 posts)Trump and his race warriors are fighting to subvert that. But they're not racist. Wink. Wink. Nudge. Nudge.

It's guaranteed that if a national politician receives a threat, the SS or FBI will come knocking and the same should apply to mainstream media personalities.
