A leading medical university in Japan wanted more male studentsso its reportedly been lowering the entrance exam scores of female applicants for years.
The school, Tokyo Medical University, has been systematically reducing all female applicants scores by 10 to 20 per cent since around 2010, according to the Asahi Shimbun.
Many female students who graduate end up leaving the actual medical practice to give birth and raise children, a source told the Asahi Shimbun, describing the motivation behind lowering womens applicant scores. There was a silent understanding, the source said, that lowering the scores of female applicants, thus boosting the number of accepted male applicants, would be one way to resolve the doctor shortage.
A university official characterised the score alterations as a necessary evil and a silent consent, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun. The source also said that there was a widely held belief in the surgical department that it takes three women to serve as one man.

(20,202 posts)It'd been about 50/50 for 15 years, but in 2017, female med students slightly edged out men. At some medical schools, there are far more female than male students.

(25,538 posts)Easy to imagine their opinion of women as inferiors whose role in society is being good wives and wise mothers. Bullshit that many female students go through the trouble and expense of medical school only to quit and be housewives. If they leave the medical profession it's because they can't get good job opportunities, don't get promoted, conditions are bad and it all becomes too stressful.
And this wouldn't have been discovered if the university wasn't being investigated for bribery, admitting some idiot son of a rich guy. The usual.
