Senate Democrats to end boycott, plan to meet with Kavanaugh later this month
Source: WaPo
Senate Democrats will begin meeting with Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh to press him privately on releasing his papers, a senior Democratic aide said Friday, after Democrats had boycotted these sit-downs for weeks amid a document dispute with Republicans.
Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, had held off scheduling the traditional one-on-one sessions as they tussled with Republicans over releasing documents from Kavanaughs voluminous paper trail, primarily from his time in the George W. Bush White House.
But Schumer and Feinstein will start meeting with President Trumps pick to succeed retired Justice Anthony M. Kennedy after the Senate returns from its truncated recess on Aug. 15, a senior Senate Democratic aide said. They will press Kavanaugh on releasing his papers from his tenure as Bushs staff secretary which Republicans argue are irrelevant in assessing his fitness to be a justice and question him about their contents.
In addition to questioning Judge Kavanaugh on health care, womens freedom, presidential power and other issues, Senate Democrats intend to demand that he call for and support the release of all of his files from his time in the Bush White House, the aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity to freely describe party strategy. Democrats will urge Judge Kavanaugh to ask the National Archives and President Bush to adhere to the same standard that was met for Justice [Elena] Kagans confirmation.

(31,112 posts)now that the GOP doesnt follow the rules of democracy.
DNC is always in a "no win" situation. I think meeting with him is one way to expose who he really is, sadly he will just lie to them like Roberts and Alito did, like Thomas and Gorsuch did.
All republicans are no good fucking filthy liars.

(6,229 posts)As much as we would like for the Dems to be able to stop all we don't like, elections have consequences. I know it sounds trite, but it's true. Every time trump et al do something or say something, I just shake my heard and think about for the purity left HRC was progressive enough. If the lesson of 2016 hasn't been learned, we just my lose our country. I know a couple that are still working and could retire. They are too scared of trump to do that. Instead they are going to continue to work and collect SS. It won't hurt them because they are already at full retirement age. Some folks say that is double dipping. I say it's a good idea.

I meant "wasn't" progressive enough. I'm at work. Give me a break.

(6,881 posts)Sorry. Not grammar picking. The general tone seemed pretty despondent. Understandable, of course. But couldn't get why you thought so. Too radical? Not radical enough? Desperate times these days require serious solutions.

(6,229 posts)I watched in horror as the country moved right election after election going back to reagan. Now it seems that the country is moving left (not far left). I sure hope left leaning voters realize how serious the midterms are.

(6,881 posts)And to be shocked that it ever got this far. After all the gains that had been made and to see them not only threatened but reversed. Even the Endangered Species Act? Signed into law under Nixon? November will be the critical test. I'm actually pretty confident in the long term but in the short term it could be catastrophic and the short term could take a very long time. I'm actually as concerned about what happens if the midterms fail. It will be a powder keg waiting for a spark. And the spark will come.

As for working & collecting SS...any SS benefit that you don't get in the present because of work, you get added to your check after you quit working. You don't lose it.
That's different from add'l taxes on your SS because of investment income.

(6,229 posts)I don't see it that way. They will be bringing out all that is known about Kavanaugh. The Dems have very little power. The repubs do not need them to confirm. We lost big time. In order to win in November we need Dems and independents. It's sucks, but we lost.

(37,648 posts)Not.
There's no point in wasting time on this. They have absolutely no say in it. I guess they just want to try to be relevant? Or bring out something they think one or 2 Republicans might find interesting and vote against Kavanaugh because of it? That's very unlikely. Any Repub who doesn't vote for Kavanaugh will have to leave politics or the party, or both. They will be done for in that party.
