Swedish police say several officers fired on disabled man

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The Swedish prosecutor in charge of investigating whether police committed an error when fatally shooting a 20-year-old disabled man who waved a toy gun, said Friday that it has emerged that several officers opened fire.

"The man held a weapon-like object and officers opened fire after judging the situation as threatening," Martin Tiden said, adding that the probe was "routine" because policemen had used their firearms. No police officers are suspected of foul play, he said.

Eric Torell was shot early Thursday morning in Stockholm and died of his wounds shortly after.

"It has subsequently been established that the object was some kind of toy," Tiden said, and "more than one police officer made use of his firearm."

Man with toy gun shot dead by Swedish police
 August 3, 2018

A young man fatally shot by Swedish police while carrying a toy gun in Stockholm had Down’s syndrome and a form of autism, local media report.

Officers opened fire on Eric Torell, 20, in response to what they described as a “threatening situation” in the early hours of Thursday morning.

He was reported missing after leaving home hours earlier, his family said.

Eric’s mother, Katarina Söderberg, said the toy was a gift and she described her son as “the world’s kindest man”.

“like a submachine gun.”

His mother also said he had left home like this before, a number of times, but was always found and returned.

Knowing he might leave home carrying his toy submachine gun, wouldn't his mother think that maybe other people might freak out seeing an adult male with such a gun?

walking, making a telephone call. they seem to have covered it all by now. Maybe I should teach my daughter not to yell at me while I change her diapers. Next thing I know the cops may be breaking and shooting me. Sarcasm, not so much.
