A gay couple from upstate New York were denied a marriage license by the county clerk and now even the Governor is getting involved.
Thomas Hurd and Dylan Toften from Root, New York, went to the local county courthouse expecting to walk away with a marriage license. County clerk Laurel Eriksen, however, turned them away.
Toften posted on Facebook that Eriksen told them to make an appointment with a different clerk. Town Attorney Robert Subik originally claimed the lack of an appointment was part of the problem.
Eriksen didnt process the two mens marriage license application because they failed to make an appointment with her, as everyone is required by her office to do, Subik told the Daily Gazette. Still, he admitted that her religious beliefs also played a major role in her refusal.

(29,674 posts)I worked with people in mental health who took.the state jobs because they offered good insurance and benefits for large families. When it was time to lead monthly sex ed talks they refused because of religion . When a few were med certified and had to pass birth control pills for menstrual irregularities they refused for religious reasons.
I hated that crap. Do your damn job or quit.

(872 posts)I love how they pretend it was the lack of an appointment which caused the problem.
Then they backtrack and admit that even with an appointment, it would likely have been refused.

I am glad our experience in a small Oklahoma town was quite pleasant, but I am afraid everything will start to backslide as more and more people are emboldened to express their bigotry. The other sad thing is, I honestly don't feel many will be that concerned about LGBT issues and we may see a severe backlash soon.

(5,499 posts)If there are two different denominations of Christianity with conflicting views on a particular issue, who wins. Allowing one side to impose their will on the other infringes on someone's religious liberty. What if I am a Catholic who is morally opposed to divorce and a man and a woman who I know have had divorces come to me for a marriage license. Can I deny their request based on religious liberty? But let's also say they belong to a church that recognizes divorce as legitimate. Who wins? I'm using the term win flippantly, as this whole thing has turned into some sort of twisted contest of who can claim to be the most morally outraged...
