Source: The Guardian
Russian president reportedly tells diplomats Trump is considering referendum offer.
The proposal seeks to resolve the four-year-old conflict in Ukraines Donetsk and Luhansk regions that followed Russias annexation of Crimea.
Ukraine has offered the regions autonomy under its rule. Parts of the regions that are controlled by Russia-backed separatists the rebel peoples republics of Donetsk and Luhansk held their own referendums in May 2014 and declared independence from Ukraine. The votes were not recognised by Ukraine, the US or the EU, while Russia said it respected the results.
Sergei Aksyonov, the governor of Crimea, told the Russian state-run news service RIA Novosti: I am positive that [Putin] is doing everything in his power to [get the US to] recognise Crimea [as a Russian region] and lift the sanctions. The first step was made, lets wait for the results now.

Okay, this is a very complicated situation. I can't imagine that Benedict Donald would even begin to understand this situation. He is playing a yes man game with Putin.
America is supposed to be an open government. None of this should be happening with trump, all by himself.

Or maybe let the people of Chechnya vote on independence?
As long as we're carving up countries via referendums.

(32,767 posts)This headline is very confusing and strangely worded. The USA would not be voting because it has nothing to do with us.
For some reason Putin asked Trump for his opinion, but trust me Trump doesn't give a FF about it. This is of no concern to us or NATO.

(6,344 posts)I also think the key to the article is that we heard about something discussed at the meeting, not from the US, but from Russia. We have not heard anything from the WH about the content of the meeting.
