Occupy Oakland plans more antipolice rallies
Carolyn Jones,Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writers
Tensions between Oakland police and Occupy protesters escalated Sunday, a day after an antipolice rally downtown turned violent and resulted in six arrests.
Protesters pledged to hold weekly demonstrations against the police, who they say have been overzealous in enforcing no-lodging, trespassing and other laws to break up Occupy encampments.
"The solution is very obvious. All (Mayor Jean Quan) has to do is stop enforcing these laws," said Occupy Oakland activist Phil Horne. "If they set reasonable rules, we'll abide by them."
Clashes with police have been a hallmark of Occupy Oakland since October, when police made their initial clearance of a camp in front of City Hall that had become a gathering spot for economic injustice protests modeled on Occupy Wall Street.

There is a reason we have camp grounds in public parks.
Now if Occupy Oakland wants to hold a protest, I'm all for them.

(53,410 posts)Knowing full well it will get them arrested. Perhaps you're too busy finding fault with what everyone says to make the connection I was making regarding their Constitutional right to demand redress.
You just never give up in your negative opinions about OWS do you?

(34,845 posts)By trying to take over public space for their own use, OWS set up an inevitable conflict that didn't need to occur.
And, as usual, when two large groups have disparate goals, over-reaction occurred.

(307 posts)Actually, Mr. Horne's statement makes it obvious why Occupy Oakland has experienced far more encounters with law enforcement than any of the other Occupy protesters.

The very sight of police showing up in riot gear, waving clubs, and using them on people for minor violations, doesn't exactly allow me much sympothy for the police.
The police better think about the whole picture before the weather improves.

(307 posts)Fortunately, the Occupy Movement has for the most part, been governed by individuals who possess quite a bit more savoir-faire, than you exhibit.
To be successful, a positive public image must be maintained at all costs; and that includes enduring the misconduct of law enforcement officials. Your childish declaration regarding what The police better think about indicates that you are unable to see the trap that has been set for you.
THIS IMAGE WILL WIN FAR MORE SUPPORT
THAN THIS ONE WILL

(1,628 posts)Perhaps you can advise the Occupy participants how better to be beat and pepper sprayed to further advance their cause? Tossing about french words does not impress me, maybe they work on cops.
I could explain my post in more detail, but you were never interested to start with.
Have a nice day and save the reply, as i'm not interested.

(15 posts)The occupiers unwillingness to not engage local institutional organizations is understandable. Most of these city organizations are populated by, and controlled by people with similar interests as the corporate power holders the occupiers are protesting against.
That said, it is very important to occupy these institutions, we need to make them ours. If something is being talked about about occupy, we need to have our own representatives there.

(15 posts)I didn't mean that they should not engage these organizations. I actually think it is nesesary to. I was just explaining the very real reasons why they do not trust them.

(15 posts)While many of us may feal that way. Carrying a sign like that is idiotic. Go ahead and give Fox news a nece clip to play whenever they talk about the movement.

(13,390 posts)Calling the police out for misconduct is legitimate. But, changing the entire conversation to a rebellion against legal authority is totally counterproductive.
