Investigators said that a 10-year-old child who died recently after years of physical abuse may have come out as gay just before he was killed.
Last Wednesday, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department responded to a 911 call at Anthony Avaloss home and were told by his mother Heather Barron that the child had suffered injuries from a fall.
He had severe head injuries and cigarette burns on his body, and his mother and her boyfriend Kareem Leiva had been reported numerous times for child abuse. Anthony was unresponsive and taken to the hospital, where he died a day later.
Since 2013, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the police received 16 calls from school officials and family members concerning child abuse by Barron and Leiva. At least 13 of those calls, according to an anonymous source who spoke with the LA Times, were about Anthony specifically, not one of his six siblings.

(14,176 posts)These parents must have had some relative or close aquantence working in the DCFS to be allowed to get away with this for so long. I hope there is a thorough investigation.

(3,148 posts)Most of these stories the children had no one to turn to for help. In this case, family members and school officials called about abuse allegations. Which means it had to be glaring signs of abuse for outsiders to get involved.

(11,100 posts)DCFS needs a tough, thorough, top-to-bottom overhaul and clean out. Kardashian tweets get more attention and reaction than these heartbreaking stories about abused children.
Any DUers who were abused as children and who had nobody to rescue them from their abusers know what horrific, long-term damage can come of this.

A 2013 investigation also concluded that Anthony was sexually abused by a grandparent.
DCFS Director Bobby Cagle said that the reports included accusations that Anthony and his siblings were denied food and water, sexually abused, beaten, dangled upside-down from a staircase, forced to crouch for hours, locked in a small room without a bathroom, forced to fight, and told to eat from the trash.

Authorities arrested the boyfriend of a mother of a 10-year-old Lancaster boy on suspicion of murder Wednesday after suspected physical and sexual abuse, NBC4 has learned.
Kareem Leiva, 32, who detectives and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services identified as the boy's stepfather, was told he would be taken into custody during an interview with Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department homicide detectives at an unmarked law enforcement office on Sierra Highway.
At the conclusion of the interview Leiva pulled down his shirt collar to reveal a day-old gash across his neck, an injury he told detectives was self inflicted as part of a suicide attempt, law enforcement sources said.
NBC4 was outside as paramedics were called to treat Leiva, who was taken by ambulance to a hospital with a sheriffs escort.

(6,819 posts)medical staff is about such claims. Whether it's a 3 month old or a 10 year old, they are on to the BS that abusive parents try to peddle, know what fall injuries look like, and know how most parents react to such accidents. Abusers have strange reactions. Authorities are called and law enforcement enters the picture.
