Virginia GOP Calls For Boycott Of Restaurant That Turned Away Sanders
Source: Talking Points Memo
By Nicole Lafond | June 25, 2018 2:26 pm
The Virginia state GOP has seized on news that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked to leave a restaurant in Virginia on Friday night and has called for a boycott of the business, Red Hen.
In a tweet on Monday morning, the state Republican Party painted the incident as the intolerant left showing its true colors. It asked followers to sign a boycott petition to show Red Hen that patriotic Trump supporters are the silent majority in Virginia!
On the petition page, the group claimed that Sanders was thrown out in the middle of dinner because she works for President Donald Trump. However, Red Hen co-owner Stephanie Wilkinson told The Washington Post on Saturday that she pulled Sanders aside on the restaurant patio and asked her to leave after her chef and other staff members expressed discomfort in serving her.
In order to sign the boycott petition, the GOP asks for a participants address, email and phone number. The petition had received a little more than 50 signatures as of Monday afternoon.

(1,752 posts)the business owners personal morality (eg baker refusing to bake wedding cakes for gay couples).
That's EXACTLY what happened here - customer refused on moral grounds (per interview with the owner).
Being a republican ahole isn't even a protected class so what are they complaining about? If you cause a disruption you can be evicted.
Why can the baker refuse on moral grounds, but not this restaurant owner, what am I missing?
Jedi Guy
(3,254 posts)They ruled that the baker had been treated unfairly by the state commission that initially fielded the complaint from the would-be customers. The gist of it was that the commission showed hostility towards the baker's religious beliefs and didn't adjudicate the matter in a neutral manner.
As for "causing a disruption," can that be fairly said if a person enters a business and others react strongly? They "caused" the disruption by being there only in the sense that other people reacted. Those other people are, presumably, adults and responsible for their own actions. Saying that the objectionable person "caused" the ruckus smacks of "the devil made me do it."
This business of "I don't like your politics so you have to leave my establishment" is only going to fuel hostility. I won't say the business owner is in the wrong, only that I don't agree with it. The bit about "my employees were uncomfortable serving her" didn't impress me much. If an employee's discomfort always resulted in customers being asked to leave, commerce would grind to a halt in short order.
Now that that tactic has been used, it's fair game for conservatives to use it against us. We can hardly cheer it when it's used on SHS and then object if someone used it against Hillary or another Democratic luminary.
DFW
(54,443 posts)Not on Democratic celebrities, but on everyday normal people, as in the Colorado bakery. It was their idea. Republicans hardly have a leg to stand on when confronted with the tactic they so fervently advocate.
As for Hillary, I think she probably has the good sense to know about any establishment where she is planning to dine out before she shows up.

(26,760 posts)On any grounds at all - as long as they aren't on grounds that would otherwise be legally protected (e.g., no women, no disabled, etc.)
That has been true long before the recent ruling.
Unfortunately, there are no points to be scored here... because nobody in the administration is saying that she should sue or that the establishment had violated some right to eat there. They're just saying that they don't like how she was treated and they would like people who agree to not do business with the restaurant. That, too, is entirely within the rules both before and after the recent ruling.

It looks like Lexington itself is a Democratic-leaning pocket within a Republican-leaning county.
DFW
(54,443 posts)The Red Hen restaurant is located in that pocket.
Dallas is a Democratic-leaning "pocket" within a Republican state, but if something like this happens in Dallas, then it's because of the political makeup of our little pocket, and it dosn't matter what they think of us in Waco or even in Plano.

(54,443 posts)They just didn't want a member of the Trump administration who has approved the use of "moral" religious malarkey to discriminate against the very kind of people who worked in the restaurant. I would expect the same reaction from a "Christian" place in the midwest or the south if a bunch of Hell's Angels showed up with jackets all saying "Satan" in fiery red letters. To some LGBT people, the very face of SHS evokes the same reaction.

Serious note. A lot of these users do not have a life outside of sitting around waiting for stuff like this. They gotta get off on something and I guess this is it. It doesn't hurt the restaurant at all. Plus a lot of them are getting the wrong restaurant all together because either one Red Hen exists apparently and they never passed geography 101.

That's enough people to keep them in business. They don't need ONE...STINKING...CENT from a Republican.
If I'm ever in Lexington, I will stop at the Red Hen.
