Dow sinks 400 points as trade tensions surge

Source: The Hill

Stocks fell early Monday amid concerns over U.S. trade wars, with the Dow Jones industrial average down more than 400 points, a drop of 1.75 percent.

The S&P 500 experienced a similar percentage loss, down more than 50 points or 1.87 percent.

The stock tumble followed reports in The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg that President Trump is planning to stop some Chinese companies from investing in American technology.

The Journal reported that the Treasury Department is preparing new rules to stop companies with significant Chinese ownership from buying U.S. companies with “industrially significant technology.”

Stop the goods from overseas, and who will make our products?

Most auto parts, computers, toys, hardware, clothing, shoes ... you know where they're made.

Care to dance?

I'd love to see a revival of American industry including the textile and clothing industries. But it will take too long for most Trump voters before those domestic industries can produce quality products at low prices.

Growing cotton is tough on the soil. Just saying.

They're poising themselves to buy assets at rock-bottom prices, again.

Familiar model - destitute an economy (Spain, Greece, Latin America, etc.) and then come in any buy everything for pennies on the dollar. Oh, and be sure to make the countries' taxpayers reimburse you for your efforts.

While this seems to be a model "Made In America", it is probably more international - more world-class plutocratic.

Especially when 95% of the world's consumers live outside the U.S.

"Trade" should go back to the constitutionally-mandated purview of 535 Congresspersons rather than one single idiot.

considering the rise of massive middle classes in China, India, and other countries to whom the entire US population is just a rounding error. Global trade will continue well enough without us.

Trump is living in a delusion from the distant past.

trump huge giveaways, subsidies. Also tech sectors were over enthusiastic. Market character change and warnings escalated since January. Corporate stock buybacks which reward corp exec option packages, 'deregulation', reduce consumer/citizen protection costs. etc. etc.

On the offset other side, trumpies will continue to do whatever they can, and they have already done much, to goose the market upward. trump himself is aware and very sensitive to dow moves - and has no apparent scruples, about manipulations in particular.

The only thing that will effect the deplorables will be a dive in the economy. It is a tried and true behavior. All the presidents and parties that had a poor economy were not reelected, even if the economy wasn't their fault.

The tariffs from China are smartly chosen...orange juice (FL...Rubio), whiskey (KY...McConnell), soybean farmers in Red states and Harley Davidson who tRump actually had come and had them bring their bikes to the W House.

some of us are not so lucky and will feel the pain that Trump is inflicting on this great country.

"Blame the immigrants" is not so great for Americans who "look" like immigrants.

Job hunting is harder for those of who look like job stealers.

than others so that is going to happen regardless.
I want the country to see the damage that will be done sooner rather than later as it's always the result of these GOP's policies.
So let's get it on with so the nation can see the result faster and fix it faster by changing course to democrats.

Especially since they have been crowing the economy has been the greatest ever under Twitler. I’d love to go back to those who said that and confront them when things go bad.

I do think things will get bad by September. And it all belongs to Twitler and the The karmic payback will.be sweet.
