McCaskill stays on the trail despite a broken rib -- courtesy of Joe Manchin

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) told constituents over the weekend that she’d suffered a cracked rib after a colleague saved her from choking at a Democratic caucus luncheon — an injury that took that colleague, Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), by surprise.

On Friday, as she made the rounds at an NAACP dinner in Missouri, McCaskill said that she would not be hugging people who came up to her, after Manchin accidentally injured her rib.

A spokesman for Manchin said that the accident occurred Thursday, when Senate Democrats met for lunch, a gathering that usually excludes most staffers. McCaskill began choking, and Manchin ran over to give her the Heimlich maneuver. That dislodged the blockage in McCaskill’s throat, but unbeknownst to Manchin, it left his colleague injured. McCaskill participated in the day’s final votes, then traveled home to Missouri.

McCaskill’s office did not answer a further question on the incident, but she kept up her campaign schedule over the weekend, addressing Democrats on Saturday evening at their annual dinner.

I fear that I will choke and be alone. I read that if I throw my sternum against/into a corner of a kitchen counter it will have the same effect.

Manchin lettered in four sports in high school (baseball, football, basketball, and track), and went to West Virginia University on a football scholarship. His career ended with a knee injury - the knee that was replaced forty years later.

Broken ribs after cpr is quite common. Some even say if you're not cracking ribs you're not doing it right. That's because you're trying to squish a heart by squishing the cage it's inside of. You need to put enough pressure to flex the ribs to even have a chance at affecting the heart. So it's not surprising the ribs might crack, especially if you do it 600 times over the course of 10 minutes.

The Heimlich is different. Here, you're trying to shove up through the rib cage. You're not trying to squish the rib cage itself at all. You're making a ball underneath the inside of the rib cage and thrusting the innards up through the ribcage. Ideally, the ribs aren't affected at all.

In practice, people often do it too high and compress the bottom of the ribcage, especially if they learned more from movies than from proper instruction.

All thing considered though, if you're actually choking, a few broken ribs beats the alternative.

the door frame is a good item or the back of a chair. You need to render several forceful thrusts to your abdominal are to dislodge the food. How do I know, a bay leaf got stuck in my throat.

I didn't think of using my fist and hand in between my body and the hard countertop. That makes sense.

Knowing how to help someone who is choking can save a life. Knowing how to help yourself if you are alone and get choked is another life saver. Your own! The techniques should be taught as soon as children are old enough to understand the procedure. And then renew the training annually. Workplaces can take a few minutes during safety training to go over the steps, too.

make a statement like that But I guess my observation is shi because of your reluctance to understand, one must be trained in this ant-choking maneuver. I'm glad Sen. McCaskill is still here. Go try to insult someone else, please

always a real possibility. I guess maybe I appeared to be sarcastic or insufferable. I had to be trained to do this right for the elderly and children. That is all I really intended to impart. Training in this maneuver and drowned people maneuver are essential to cause less injury. Sorry if I came off as a know it all ahole.
