Lawyer: No threat from unarmed teen shot dead by officer while fleeing traffic stop

Source: CBS News

June 21, 2018, 6:20 PM

EAST PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- A 17-year-old boy fatally shot by a police officer in Pennsylvania seconds after he fled a traffic stop did not pose a threat to anyone, a lawyer for the family of the teen said. Civil rights attorney S. Lee Merritt said late Wednesday that he doesn't see any apparent justification for the use of deadly force by an East Pittsburgh police officer that left Antwon Rose Jr. dead.

Allegheny County police are conducting an independent investigation of the shooting in East Pittsburgh, a borough about 10 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Part of the encounter was captured on video and posted to Facebook by a bystander.

The shooting has sparked some social media outrage and calls for punishment of the officer, including from rapper Nas and a handful of other celebrities. Thursday, the officer was identified as Michael Rosfeld by the Allegheny County Police Department, according to CBS Pittsburgh.

Yesterday, when I first saw pictures of Antwon Rose and then learned that he was an honors student at Woodland Hills High School (a rival of my nephew’s high school) and also that he played sports and was “kind” and “well-mannered” and “intelligent” and all the other things people say when what they’re really saying is “This kid didn’t deserve to die,” I couldn’t not see my nephew. Each time Antwon Rose’s picture flashes on a TV screen or my laptop monitor, I see him.

I also see my brother-in-law. And my younger (15-year-old) nephew. And the kids who walk past my house every day to hoop at the YMCA down the street. And my nephew’s homies and teammates and classmates—many of whom I know and some of whom are the children of men and women I know....

...and I see how easily their faces could be the face flashing across our screens, their names the latest hashtag, their death the latest protest. And I wish I didn’t also see my nephew.

But I do.

1. Why was he running away?

2. Two guns were found in the car, did Rose fire either of them?

These questions in *NO* way exonerate the (absolute beginner!) cop who shot Rose.

But they are questions that need to be answered.

Why even bring it up?

There is no justification for murdering the very young man.

The person that needs to answer questions is the person that killed this young man

I have some questions I would like answered of my own

Why are you shooting at someone that is not a threat to you or anyone else?

Why do you get to play judge jury and executioner?

Is this how our justice system works?

So tired of persons looking for reasons for victim blaming than seeing what is in front of their eyes.

One police department can not conduct an independent investigation of another police department. The nation's police are all the same gang.

Police are too dam lazy to chase running kids down.

That kinds of stuff could cause heart failure.
