Former First Ladies Band Together To Decry Separation Of Migrant Families

The three most recent former first ladies have banded together to condemn the Trump administrations policy of separating migrant families at the border in a bipartisan call for compassion in the face of the immigrants plight.
Laura Bush opened the salvo on Sunday with an editorial in the Washington Post, a rare public position on policy from the usually low-key first lady. I live in a border state, she said. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.
Michelle Obama reached across the aisle to support her Republican counterpart on Monday with a retweet of Bushs article. She captioned it: Sometimes truth transcends party.
Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton had taken to the air Monday, devoting an award acceptance speech to her own Link to tweet

(3,275 posts)She has not issued a statement yet. Getting these three first ladies united together is good to see.

(3,254 posts)The former, I expect. Their train of thought will derail moments from the station when they realize that Mrs. Bush is siding with two former first ladies who are Democrats. Furthermore, one of those is Hillary Clinton, who is essentially the Antichrist to Trump's cultists. When you add Michelle Obama into the mix, the train of thought explodes shortly after it jumps the rails.
No matter what is being said, the presence of those two women will provoke a visceral "NO" reaction in your average Trumpanzee. The three former first ladies could be coming together to express their love of ice cream, and the reaction from Trump's true believers would be the same. Their loathing of Michelle and Hillary will utterly preclude the message.

(3,254 posts)Trump's true believers are in so deep they won't or can't turn around. All of the card-carrying Republicans I still associate with are horrified that Trump is tearing families apart like this. The drift of sentiment is mainly that it's one thing to enforce immigration law, and quite another to do so in the cruelest way possible, apparently just for shits and giggles.
The #NeverTrumpers are still out there, but the Trumpanzees are getting all the bandwidth. Trump can count on his kooky followers if he lasts long enough to run in 2020, but I think a sizable chunk of the rest of the Republicans will sit it out or vote against him out of disgust. If I'm right, he'll take an electoral drubbing that'll be beautiful to see. There's a lot of division within the GOP because of him, even if it's not getting a lot of airtime at the moment.

(89,271 posts)the Bush twins are liberals for sure though . and i think some of their female cousins .
but Laura might appeal to the non partisan types who don't pay close attention but say things like "both sides need to work together" . they are turned off by things that come off as too extreme in either direction.

I honestly would not have guessed. Especially given the company he keeps.

(54,437 posts)There has been reference to a wife. Whether or not there really is one, or several women who have been selected to fulfill the role when called upon to do so is another matter. I couldn't tell you for sure which is the case. Ask Dennis Rodman, maybe?
