Scott surges past Nelson with older Florida voters

Gov. Rick Scott is virtually tied with Sen. Bill Nelson among Florida voters, but the Republican is dominating the Democrat by 9 points among those nearing or at retirement age a group that casts the majority of Floridas votes.
The results, drawn from a forthcoming POLITICO/AARP poll delving into the policy views of Florida voters aged 50 and older, exposes a political divide that bodes relatively well for Republicans when compared to some nationwide polling that shows a more-favorable environment for Democrats.
Overall, voters in the nations largest swing state are almost evenly split when it comes to opinions of President Trumps job performance, with 48 percent approving and 49 percent disapproving. But Trumps job approval rises to 52 percent and his disapproval falls to 44 percent among voters older than 50 a crucial demographic in the retiree-heavy state because they have historically cast about two-thirds of all the ballots in midterm elections.
Similarly, Scott leads Nelson overall by 40 percent to 39 percent, but Scotts support grows to 44 percent while Nelsons shrinks to 35 percent with those 50 and older. Floridas Senate race is shaping up to be the most expensive in the nation and could be the most expensive in Senate history, with some estimating it could hit the $200 million mark.

(7,399 posts)In my youth, much of the state was Democratic, although not all of course. With development came (even more) retirees and transplants, living with like-minded people in huge developments such as "The Villages," which have more or less become cities unto themselves. Heavily conservative with some liberals. There are also quite a few military bases. This is exactly why Repubs fear the Parkland students and anyone trying to shake the status quo.. They want to keep the younger generation unenthused about voting.
Dems have their work cut out. If a convicted Medicaid defrauder can defeat an incumbent senator it bodes ill for the future.

(47,519 posts)often tend to watch more television, so a lot depends on what they are watching. After going through a really rough period, my sister started watching Fox News all day long and became addicted. She has said some pretty crazy crap that did not reflect the person I knew or the family who raised us. The brainwashing is very effective and scary as hell.
I say this as an older person, who is inclined to question almost everything I hear or read.

(14,566 posts)My mother was a JFK Democrat.
Got into CNN in the late 80s/early 90s.
Then by the late 90s slid over to Fox.
I took her out to lunch during the 2004 primaries at Wendy's, and she launched into an angry diatribe about how embarrased she was over Howard Dean and the "scream", and I was saddened because he was her kind of Dem that I know of growing up.
They got her ...

(47,519 posts)and I'm afraid that it is more common than we'd like to think. My ex brother-in-law was a huge JFK supporter, so when he supported Trump, I was appalled.
I noticed the biggest change after 9/11. So many of us had the TV tuned to cable news most every day and if the station happened to be Fox, some people became hooked. The tragedy was a gift to Fox. They had all the tools necessary to get unsuspecting people addicted.
I remember talking to a relatively intelligent woman and I disagreed with something she said. She proudly replied, "I keep myself informed". I knew what she meant by 'informed' immediately, she watched Fox News and thought it really was news. So many people moved from Dr. Phil and Big Brother to Fox News and thought they were informed. They didn't realize it was just another form of reality TV.

While I question polls run by politico, who always go out of their way to always present a negative slant against Democrats in their stories, in this case most of the other polls indicate that the Florida Senate race is very close.

(3,197 posts)The bit about much of America being racist, sexist, and bigoted, that is. Everyone has some bias, at least of the unconscious sort, as studies have shown us over and over.
But outright racism and bigotry? I don't think so. I think most Americans are decent people. But the racist shitheels kick out a lot more volume. They're an extremely loud minority compared to a quiet, decent minority. That's particularly true now, given that they feel their views are more socially acceptable with Dolt 45 running the show. They're just using up more bandwidth.
When we see news stories about racist incidents, it's easy to forget that these are happening in a nation of nearly 330 million people. With that many people you're bound to have some assholes in the crowd. But much of them? I don't think so.

(688 posts)... therefore, there are millions of racists in America.
As a matter of fact, I don't ever use ther word conservative. Racist asshole comes to mind. I consider the whole pro life BS as a mother hubbard to conceal fascist and racist tendencies. I remember the creation of the "moral amjority" in time for the 1980 elections, six years after Roe versus Wade. Of course the media always gives these fake movements credibility and promotes them. I'm waiting for someone in the MSM to ask what the term "conservative" really means of one of these bloviators in light of the fact that hey always empty the treasury and launch expensive wars. Currently, they are having real trouble hiring enough poverty wage workers so they are trying to force the disabled to take jobs by cutting assistance. If i still had a rotator cuff I would be throwing lead weighted Bibles at them.

But if you wanna tar an entire group with that big old broad brush because of some members of that group (which, incidentally, is how racists think) carry on. I'll be over here in the real world where nuance is a thing.

If you rationalize that a good number who voted for him were conned, that falls flat on its face because trump did not hide his racist, sexist views in his campaign
A year has gone by and 41% of the American populace approve of what he is doing
I stand by my statement, a good number of the populace approve of a racist sexist bigot

(3,197 posts)If you're convinced that about half the population in America is evil, then I really don't know what to say to you. Putting everyone in a "good" or "evil" category is a very simplistic and absolutist way of looking at the world.

Not saying GOPers are better than Dems on healthcare at all. But I think we need to know the truth.
Personally, I think Floridas elderly GOPers are white wing racists who think minorities are the biggest threat to their SS and Medicare. Dont know how we get past that crud.

(937 posts)Hello Florida Seniors who rely on Medicare!
The recent tax cut passed by republicans has massively increased the deficit. The budget needs to be cut-after the elections of course. Medicare is a huge expenditure and surely can be made more efficient. Wow that chemotherapy is expensive. The republicans may have great ideas like having the vast majority of newer chemo drugs classified as experimental so Medicare wont have to pay for them. But hey, you have that tax cut money so you can pay for them yourself. Also, Im sure the drug companies will lower the prices as dotard is asking. Maybe from $27,000 a month to $25,000 a month. So yeah, go ahead and vote for Scott. Also, start praying you never get cancer because you wont be able to afford it.
