Trump-Kim summit: US to table unprecedented security deal

Source: The Guardian

Washington is prepared to offer North Korea unprecedented security guarantees, the US secretary of state has said in Singapore on the eve of the summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

Mike Pompeo did not specify what security assurances Trump would offer Kim but made clear they would go even further than a 2005 agreement in which the US pledged not to attack North Korea with nuclear or conventional weapons.

“It is the case we are prepared to give security assurances necessary for the North Koreans to engage in ... denuclearisation,” Pompeo told reporters. “We are prepared to take actions that will provide them sufficient certainty that they can be comfortable that denuclearisation isn’t something that ends badly for them.”

He added: “We are prepared to make ... security assurances that are different, [more] unique than, what America has been willing to provide previously. We think this is both necessary and appropriate.”

Even after touching down in Singapore, it was clear that trade disputes with US allies in Quebec continued to rankle Trump.

“Sorry, we cannot let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on trade any more,” Trump . “We must put the American worker first!”

Trump and his entourage met the Singaporean prime minister for lunch on Monday. He told Lee: “We’ve got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I just think it’s going to work out very nicely.”

Trump is practicing 19th century mercantilism: home country protectionist capitalism focused on manufacturing. Unfortunately for him the world has moved beyond that. We are going to be left with a bankrupt country that only produces the highest cost goods in the world and no one is going to want to sell to us, or we can't afford what they sell. Stripping the country of everything to give to your friends and family and leaving people with guns and pollution and cancer and no health care is such MAGA! So much WINNING Americans won't be able to stand it.

After all, the US is now well-known for always adhering to its agreements. Right?

Assurances? Like what? Pull our troops off the Korean peninsula or cease all military exercises with the South Koreans? South Korea would go ape shit. Never going to happen. Remove our nuclear umbrella from SK and Japan? They'd both go ape shit. Never going to happen. Other than that, US assurances are mere words and NK won't accept that. Thus, they won't give up their nukes, making this whole exercise a complete and total waste of time.

one can trust his assurances about anything.

It wasn't exactly that long ago that Trump's people Bolton and Pence) were threatening Kim with an outcome like Libya's--and Ghaddafi actually did give up his nuclear program, only to be brutally murdered in an uprising pushed and supported by the US.
