Romney says Dems using Akin flap to discredit GOP
Source: AP
WASHINGTON (AP) Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney says it is sad that President Barack Obama's campaign is stooping to the low level of trying to link Rep. Todd Akin's statements about abortion to the entire GOP.
Akin is the Missouri Senate candidate who said women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy after a "legitimate" rape. Romney and other GOP leaders have criticized those statements and urged Akin to drop out of the Senate race.
In an interview broadcast Sunday on "Fox News Sunday," Romney called Akin's statements outrageous and offensive.

Dems don't have to do a thing but read the GOP platform. Guess he hasn't read it yet.

And it isn't like we're misrepresenting Akin's attitudes. What he said should be criticized. We're not going to refrain from doing because it might discredit the GOP!

(27,461 posts)if the interviewer was Chris Wallace, possibly yes, otherwise almost certainly no. Even on non-Fox networks they might just sit there and let Mitt say this without saying anything.

(13,624 posts)years. Bill after bill in the house. Wacko personhood and now this Akin/Ryan link. They wanted to harp on abortion, now we need to jam it down their throats! Every moderate to liberal journalist should try and shift every interview or debate to abortion. Don't let them talk about anything else.

(54,447 posts)Akin is Ryan, and Romney, no matter what the reason, chose Ryan.
Akin's statements are linked to the GOP because Akin IS the GOP. They can discredit him all the want, but he still has plenty of financing for his Senate run, and that means the GOP is still behind him. Maybe Akin won't speak in Tampa, but Huckabee will, and Huckabee is 100% behind Akin, and the GOP is proudly inviting Huckabee to speak at their podium.*
If Romney thinks that is ugly, well, he's spot on. It IS ugly. His party is ugly. His running mate is ugly. His party's platform is ugly, and this country will be one ugly place if he gets into the Oval Office, because Ryan, and therefore the Kochs would be whispering in his ear, telling him what to do for four long, dark bleak years.
*Interesting on its own: The Republican convention has Fox commentators speaking at their party podium. How many MSNBC commentators are speaking at the DNC? Is this the final cessation of the pretense that Fox is not the media propaganda arm of the Republican Party?

I keep saying I have seen it all, that nothing surprises me anymore. Then the sun comes up and it happens AGAIN.

(14,177 posts)Well, I disagree Akin looked like he was enjoying himself fine in that interview. Akin pledges to carry his candidacy to term. The GOP didn't at any point try to fight Akin off, in fact many were in bed with Akin when he was writing bills to attempt to make abortions difficult to get. I think the GOP should just lay down and enjoy what is happening, since the outcome seems to be inevitable. I think if the GOP wants to abort Akin they need to prove that his membership to the party was forcible.
