The education secretary says panel set up after Florida school shooting wont look at role of guns in school violence.
Betsy DeVos on Tuesday said the federal commission on school safety set up after a Florida high school shooting will not be looking at the role of guns in school violence.
The education secretary was asked during a congressional hearing whether the panel, which she is chairing, will look at guns in the context of school safety. That is not part of the commissions charge per se, DeVos told a Senate subcommittee overseeing education spending. We are actually studying school safety and how we can ensure our students are safe at school.
Senator Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, who asked the question, quipped.
So you are studying gun violence, but not considering the role of guns.
At the same time, a fact sheet posted on the White House website says the commission will study age restrictions for certain firearm purchases, among other topics. Liz Hill, press secretary for the Department of Education told the AP in a statement that the commission will look at all the issues the president asked it to study.
She added, however, Its important to note that the commission cannot create or amend current gun laws that is the Congress job.
DeVos is chairing the panel that Donald Trump created following the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida..

(2,199 posts)in my high school classroom with Devos heading a panel talking about school safety and not about gun issues.....NOT!!!! Idiot woman! Granted my school has one SRO on campus, unless she is in court. Tough COP, well respected by students and faculty alike. We are not a huge high school nor a small one, 1600kids 9-12. Largest I've taught in and we definitely have potential for violence just as do all high schools, middle schools and elementary schools, plus colleges/universities. To hold a panel without discussing gun violence and ways to protect our schools against that possibility is ludicris. Not a teacher on our faculty wants teachers to have firearms in the classroom. I'm a gun owner and ver,y very comfortable around guns...private ownership and 38 years as a Soldier....now teaching history. So frustrating, this administration and our elected politicians, both parties included, that lack any morsel of courage to stop gun violence with better legislation. I'm not advocating getting rid of 2nd Amendment at all, just for smarter and more responsible legislation and ownership.
