The congressman will continue serving as the DNCs No. 2 during the campaign.

Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison jumped into the race for Minnesota attorney general Tuesday, the final day candidates were allowed to file.
Ellison wont leave Congress immediately, but he will not run for reelection. He will also remain deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee during his campaign.
The decision follows several days of political chaos in Minnesota. Current Attorney General Lori Swanson failed to get re-nominated for her job at the Democrat-Farmer-Labor convention over the weekend. Then on Monday, she announced she would run for governor instead, with retiring Rep. Rick Nolan as her running mate.
The move has been a long time coming for Ellison, who toyed with jumping into the race at the end of last year before opting against it under the assumption Swanson would run again. Hes eager to take on a more prominent role in the Democratic opposition to the Trump administration, and he sees that opportunity in being attorney general and joining the legal fight, rather than continuing in Congress.

(101,318 posts)Since he's a politician you'd think would be renominated for his seat without opposition, I'd presume no one good has been challenging him. How long to get a good candidate in place? Is it a dead-safe Democratic seat? These things ought to be in a 'Politico' report.

(115,706 posts)Ellison wouldn't have kept getting re-elected otherwise. CD5 is mostly the People's Republic of Minneapolis and it will not go GOP.

(24,931 posts)He's a shoo-in in CD5, but outstaters would probably not vote for him. Plus, I like him as my rep and would like to see him stay in CD5.

(115,706 posts)for Ellison as Senator or Governor. I think most people who'd vote D anyhow will vote for whoever the AG nominee is if he makes a good pitch for consumer protection.
