Trump's Trade War Is Already Hurting American Whiskey Distillers

Source: time

By Ciara Nugent 8:42 AM EDT

The consequences of the Trump administration’s steel and aluminum tariffs are already being felt across global markets. But the makers of one iconic American product say they stand to suffer more than most: bourbon whiskey distillers.
........................

Bourbon whiskey is among the U.S. exports on the E.U.’s list of potential targets for retaliatory tariffs, alongside Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Levi’s jeans. Distillers and whiskey sellers told TIME the threat of retaliation had already had an impact. “Even before these tariffs are in place, I’m losing business,” says Stephen Gould, founder of the Colorado-based Golden Moon Distillery, which sells bourbon to several countries in the E.U. “I’ve already had customers in Europe that have stopped ordering because they’re concerned.”

“I’m having to do damage control with partners in Italy and the U.K. I’m going to have to take a cut on my profits, because the people on the other side won’t take the hit. If it’s more expensive to get American bourbon or rye they’ll just go for other products.”

.........

Europeans have developed quite a taste for American whiskeys in recent years. Sales to the E.U. account for almost half of all U.S. spirit exports and 85% of these are American whiskey, according to the American Craft Spirits Association..................

If your answer's yes, then you built this. It's on you. And if you're getting screwed now, that's just too damn bad.

We tried to warn you. We tried to warn you. We tried to warn you. But you didn't want to listen. And now your precious hero has royally SCREWED you. Right in your pocketbook.

And I bet they still stand with him, at least for awhile.

But then again, there are the workers at these companies. A loss of orders and declining business action means people are gonna start being laid off. Many of them are probably trump supporters, I'd guess. And I wonder how long they stay devoted to him after they start taking it in the shorts from his shitty policies.

Denial is a MOST amazing thing. You can float down the river for quite a while, on denial. But what happens when you get to the rapids?

Foreign products will be more expensive with the tariffs.

Domestic producers will try to recoup their lost profits with higher prices here at home.

Prepare for a kick in the tail and higher inflation.

Trump is a maniac with no understanding of international trade.

interesting one. When is a product (such as jack daniels whiskey) actually a liquor, and beginning to be jack daniels whiskey? Could they (the distillers) ship raw, not aged jack daniels broth (before it's a liquor), to overseas, e.g., Europe, and store in caves over there (warehouses in TN, I think, I been there to JD, can't remember), and then actually create the jack daniels whiskey, bottle it, and so forth?

Just curious and an interesting question...take care.

Jack is Whiskey. But Makers is Bourbon Whisky which is different.

Bourbon has to be made in new, white oak barrels. Aged a minimum time.

It truly is a product of America.

But, there are other great Whiskys. Especially the Japanese ones.

No one has to drink American whiskey. We piss the world off enough the Scots and Japanese will benefit.

It could be done if they want to escape American labor here and tariff costs across the pond. Europe has plenty of oak and barrel makers, they grow corn and barley and have plenty of experienced distillers.

And, I don't think we have have the product protections such as those in the EU for cheese, wine, etc., that requires products to be made in a particular region.

But you're probably right - people overseas will just switch to a different liquor. That's what folks here in KY would do. When I was a kid in TN in the 60s (in a dry county, too), moonshine was our standard of reference - so anything a little better was "movin' on up", LOL.

I expect the Republicans to move the heavens and earth to remedy this. Now this is something they might split with Trump over. I wondered what it would take. Certainly, thousands dying from the lack of health coverage didn't do it. Mammoth tax cuts for the wealthy, while sticking it to the middle and poor classes didn't do it. Playing pat-a-cake with the Russians didn't do it (although most Republican politicians are guilty of that themselves). But attacking Southern heritage?

It alarms me that Trump is once again harming the people he swore to protect with his stupid tariffs. The owners and distillers will lay people off rather than take a hit to their own over-stuffed wallets.

the smaller ones would lose out on export business of course, but they don't export much to begin with. The good stuff would fetch premium prices anyway.

The big corporate ones are going to shift production to the markets where they sell it and get around the tariffs like they always do in these situations.

The dumbest Trump supporters don't know that the Japanese own Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, Four Roses, and Basil Hayden, the Brits own Bulleit, Italians own Wild Turkey. Their white nationalism blinds them into strong delusions that won't be shaken by facts.

DUers above have mentioned Bacardi but how many know they own Angel's Envy?
