Sally Yates warns Trump's 'all-out assault on the rule of law' has already targeted Bob Mueller

Sally Yates said President Donald Trump had moved dangerously close to a red line by ordering an investigation into his predecessor.

The former acting attorney general, who was fired by Trump after issuing a warning about then-national security adviser Mike Flynn, appeared Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to discuss the president’s order — which deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein has so far agreed to indulge.


“What we’re seeing here is that the president has just taken his all-out assault on the rule of law to a new level, and this time he is ordering up an investigation of investigators who are examining his own campaign,” Yates said. “You know, that’s really shocking.”

Yates agreed the president’s order could put Rosenstein or FBI director Christopher Wray in a position where they’re forced to resign, but she said his ongoing assaults on law and order were already dangerous enough.

“One of the things we have to look out for is the old ‘boiling the frog slowly’ issue,” Yates said. “You know, we become accustomed to things that the president does, in directing DOJ. I can remember a time when he would issue a tweet or directive and the reports would be, ‘in an unprecedented act,’ the president did X or Y. It’s not so unprecedented anymore and oftentimes it doesn’t even make it through the full 24-hour news cycle.”

2. The Normalization Effect is a huge danger

Watergate took 5 years.
If this is bigger than watergate, we may have to wait a long long time. During that time, Trump may very well remain in power, with the help of Russia, RW radio and TV, and all the other tricks of the trade voting suppression actions they have perfected. Every election their deplorables will be frightened into coming out in droves, voting for Trump to keep the Deep State Democrats who control all the intelligence investigators, from impeaching their messiah. And by the time any formal charges are brought, if Mueller even gets to complete it, what we take for granted today, will be even less 'normal'. By that time, any separation of the executive branch and law enforcement agencies will be gone, with only hardline true believers working not for the Constitution anymore, but for the Don.

Where American Fascism goes is anyone’s guess more and greater outrages are to come. If the Trump family goes finally bankrupt expect a life or death struggle.

5. You're right

But I don't think the Trump family will ever go bankrupt. Cheney and the Bushes, along with Rumsfeld and Rice, all got a nice chunk of change from oil and construction contracts they made for themselves at the cost of the treasury and a few thousand soldiers lives.

But the Trumps can be brought down from power, and their name can be besmirched, and their businesses can certainly be reduced greatly. I'd love to see all, or most, of the Trump names be stripped off of apartment towers all over the world and the US.

I just fear that he will, along with the rest of the GOP, slowly, like Yates illustrated as a pot of frogs, normalize the idea of having no separation of law agencies and the executive. Things that we, even now, think are unthinkable, like an illegitimate R Senate and House passing an amendment in order for a sitting President to run for a third term. You just know Trump admires how his pal Putin managed to do that.

7. He'll be rich until his dying day

Probably even wealthier than he is today.

He as many real estate holdings already, which aren't going away. Not just in the US.
He has deals all over the world branding buildings with his Trump name that last into perpetuity. Toronto and other cities failed in trying to get the courts to allow his name taken down.
He can still build his casinos, hotels, golf courses dealing with other corrupt politicians from other authoritarian states like Saudi Arabia, Russia, etc.. even if he can't in the US anymore.

The very best (or worst) that can be done to him I think is to ruin his brand in North America at least. Make the name toxic. I hope that Mueller or Avenatti are able to make something stick. That he will be forced to admit his crimes. But I just don't think he will pay the way any other person would.

9. The reason Trump has survived so far is branding.

Those who invested in his empty schemes protected their investment for the possibility of a return investment. The reason he attached himself to Russians that is all he could find to borrow money. His only real hope is Middle Eastern and Russian oil but once he loses Government that source is doomed. Golf courses and Hotels do not make you wealthy. High end real estate depends on money laundering but those days are numbered if he cannot deliver for his Russian investors. Trump cannot make a profit and at this point in his life he depends on cashing in on Government corruption after getting lucky. Problem is Trump is making way too many enemies and does not have a clue what comes next.

They think that winning the House in November will magically solve everything.

And it won't happen by magic. Just wait to see how they will cheat to keep us from taking the House. Just wait to see them suppress the vote, refuse to certify elections, etc.
