Parkland Survivor David Hogg Calls on Media to Stop Naming School Shooters

Source: Mediate

by Tamar Auber | 9:33 pm, May 20th, 2018

Parkland survivor and gun control activist David Hogg called on the media on Sunday to stop calling school shooters by name.

Hogg started his tweet by saying that he does not know the name of the Santa Fe shooter and doesn’t want to know it. He then called others to join him in a hashtag campaign that allowed the victims’ names to be seen and heard.

His tweet drew a mix of support and dissent.

Some members of the media, including Anderson Cooper, have already refused to call the Santa Fe shooter by name on their shows, claiming that the only thing the shooter deserves is justice.

Americans are WAAAAAAY too obsessed with morbid details, and up to the minute blah blah blah that if one network didn't name the person they'd simply switch to another - or look online - until they found the name... and my god twitter users will splash the name around no matter what CNN/MSNBC does...

This is not a meaningful approach.

WE ALL UNDERSTAND this is a kid who could be living next door or dating our daughter and we gloss over some of that's person's failings, ignoring the issues that kid has....to me its sanitizes the event. Evil has a face and the face could be the kid next door or our grandson or our nephew

The name and face of a criminal is part of the news and we should not encourage the media to withhold information. We could encourage the media to focus more on the victims perhaps and not give the shooter excessive attention, but yes people need to see the "face of evil". We need to try and understand such tragedies, which we can't do with edited information.

Withholding info about the killers would put RW conspiracy theories into overdrive

When he is charged with supplying the weapons.

I do think Hgg has a point though. It looks like some teens are making idols out of these shooters.

I read that the shooter from Texas told investigators that he did it because he wanted his "story" to be told. Presumably he means his story of being hard-done-by and being bullied and such. The media is obliging him in this, and other kids in similar situations may observe that it worked. He is, after all, getting the attention he craved.

On the other hand, as others have pointed out, not all media will go along with the blackout, and if you want the gory details, a quick Google search is all it'll take.
