Manchin becomes first Democrat to back Haspel
Source: The Hill
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said on Wednesday that he will vote for CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel to lead the spy agency.
Manchin is the first Democrat to come out in support of Haspel, bolstering her chances of being confirmed despite engrained opposition from progressive senators and allied outside groups.
"I have found Gina Haspel to be a person of great character. Over her 33 year career as a CIA operations officer, she has worked in some of the most dangerous corners of our world and I have the utmost respect for the sacrifices she has made for our country," Manchin said in a statement.
Manchin also pointed to Haspel's "intellect, steady temperament, vast knowledge of threats we face, and dedication to our country are undeniable" saying they "make her supremely qualified" to be the next CIA director.

(8,652 posts)Haspel made some very bad decisions. But we are not going to get a better appointment under Trump.
Sometimes, we Democrats have to decide "Do we want to be ideologically pure, or do we want to win"?
If you want to remain "ideologically pure", you should join a book club, because "politics ain't bean bag."

I not saying I personally agree with her views or methods.

(260 posts)A willingness to defy the Constitution, which she did by violating the Convention Against Torture treaty, and then destroying the evidence more than disqualifies her. She should be in prison... IMO
Remember we convicted Japanese military of torture after WW II, and we then considered waterboarding amongst the worst things they did.

(7,542 posts)I don't care if he has a little donkey on his lapel. With Dems like him the whole country will be working at Wendy's for minimum wage in short order.

(8,652 posts)Manchin could not get the Dem. nomination in a state like Mass.
And Liz Warren wouldn't get 30% in a General Election in West Virg.
Not every Dem will be like Manchin, and not every Dem will be like Warren.
We need a candidate that can win in his own district or state, not one that just makes you feel good.

(45,516 posts)This is the best we're going to get from these assholes. Between the torturer or some corrupt Trump crony, we should accept the torturer because she has the relevant experience throughout her career.
They'll all be replaced once a Dem president takes office.

(16,091 posts)I believe that under her direction, torture will become a mainstay...that she'll follow Trump's order without question...I wouldn't doubt that some captives will "be shot while attempting to escape"!!!
The choice between a torturer and a Trump crony...why are you so convinced that she isn't a Trump crony???

(47,953 posts)His praise for this bloody torturer makes me sick.
How much confidence do we have that he won't change parties if Dems win 51 votes? I have no confidence at all.
All we can hope for is to get enough real D votes eventually in the Senate to marginalize this SOB. He gives the party a bad name.

(8,652 posts)He needs to win first, than he can caucus with the Dems.
If the Rep. wins, you won't have to worry who Manchin caucuses with.
Politics is more about math than it is about philosophy. Maybe we don't get it here, but the other side really does.

(7,596 posts)And, yes, I would rather Manchin be in the Senate than some Trump-supporting knuckledragger, but that still doesn't mean I'm not allowed to get sickened by some of the things he says and does.

Does anyone have a video, lets compare on the "Immoral Issue" on what every senator did with their time to question this person who broke international standards and the Geneva Convention which this country has its name on .....................on the issue of the rule of law and the Constitution, that's what this is all about.....principles and what is Immoral.............and moral
