Ryan: Obama on Notice to ‘Put Up or Shut Up’ With Defense Cuts Plan
Source: National Journal
Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Thursday condemned President Obama in his harshest terms yet for forcing mandatory defense cuts into last summers agreement to raise the debt ceiling, saying that Congress has told the president to put up or shut up by disclosing how the cuts would be implemented.
Ryan was referring to the Sequestration Transparency Act, a bill that passed both the House and Senate by a bipartisan vote in late July. The president signed it earlier this month, although administration officials have said that Congress should devote its energy to avoiding the looming fiscal cliff instead of simply probing for details on the consequences.
The president needs to show us how he plans on putting this in place if he is not going to help us pass legislation preventing it in the first place; so were now waiting for that answer, Ryan said during a roundtable in Fayetteville, home to Fort Bragg.
The House Budget Committee chairman has made the defense cuts an increasingly frequent part of his stump speech, seeking to yoke Obama to the $550 billion in reductions that are scheduled to be implemented in January 2013 if Congress doesnt reach agreement on other spending cuts to offset the increase in the debt ceiling from last summer.

(1,524 posts)I had predicted when the so-called "compromise" was made that what would actually happen is that the defense cuts would be repealed because of "national security" while the domestic program cuts would take effect, maybe with some token reduction. I still stand by that prediction... no way either party is going to let the defense cuts (or at least a substantial portion of them) happen, but they'll be happy to hide behind the "compromise" as an excuse for domestic cuts.

Second cut: Cancel all government contracts with Oshkosh Defense, Oshkosh, WI.
Remember the "vase" cartoon we had on here last week? (It featured the Republican elephant breaking a vase then demanding the Democratic donkey give a complete description of how he was going to fix it.) Defense cuts are Ryan's vase, and I move we fix them by putting the screws to Paul Ryan.

(50,566 posts)Paul Ryan wants to have his cake (huge crippling cuts) and eat it (cuts not affecting the people in his own state) too. Which of course will not happen.
Which is why I still think the "put up or shut up" act needs to be passed--every Congress member (senators too) calling for cut-cut-cut needs to first start by proposing $10 million in cuts in his own district. They can all think of cutting the NEA, National Endowment for the Humanities, Department of Education, spending in states halfway across the country...let's see what happens when they have to put the screws to the people who voted for them.

(3,655 posts)We cut 200 billion in the 90's to balance the budget. We can't afford to spend that money every year. We don't have the money after they shipped 50,000 factories overseas during the Bush admin.

(26,332 posts)the infrastructure and the schools for example would be two good places to spend 200 billion more per year and both would probably provide more jobs than the money spent on defense.
...Coupon Care Ryan, you're an asshole.

(2,702 posts)Unless the people who would be affected most by these closures contact their representatives and tell them to work with Obama on a real budget, these are the bases that should go, in order of priority:
Utah bases (favors Romney 68%-26%)
Hill AFB
Dugway Proving Ground
Wyoming bases (favors Romney 65%-33%)
Francis E. Warren AFB
Idaho bases (favors Romney 62%-36%)
Mountain Home AFB
You get the idea. Give the people who would be affected by the base closures the chance to save their jobs by contacting their representatives and telling them why sequestration is a bad idea, and that they'd rather the rich pay their fair share than them be out of a job.
Or they can take their chances with the rich keeping their precious tax cuts that they create some replacement jobs in their areas, since government sucks and rah rah job creators.

(1,372 posts)Look at the fuel they use sending carrier groups around the world.
Look at what they pay for everyday items. I worked for a lagre company and we ordered items from special "industrial use" catalogs. We ordered items that could have been bought at Sears but the special catalogs charged 3-5 times the rate to the general public.
How much is stolen and sold on the black market and then written off.
Look at the two pallets of C4 that were stolen from the armory in the middle east!
Who was guarding that and who got busted or sent to Levinworth because they
lost the very thing that was used to make roadside bombs that are killing our soldiers?
the list is too long.... throw a dart and get on with it!

(50,566 posts)One of the best things Clinton did was to start the "IMPAC Card" program. An IMPAC (international merchant purchase authorization card) is a Visa card issued to each company's commander. Anything that costs less than $2500, once approved for purchase, is bought with this. Now, instead of going to the Self Service Supply Center and spending $68 for a gasoline lantern--yes, that's what they cost in the 1980s--the supply sergeant can go to a store downtown and pay $25 for one.

(1,372 posts)We had a Sears card (not that I'm plugging Sears but it was the actual card).
If I needed hardware or tools I would get the card and drive 4 blocks to the local store,
shop., check out with the card and then return with my receipt...done. No forms or expense
reports - done. It was very convenient and it saved money.
