Mueller Seeks 70 Blank Subpoenas in Manafort Case

Source: Courthouse News Service

(CN) – Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Thursday filed a request for 70 blank subpoenas in the Virginia court presiding over one of two criminal proceedings involving former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

The two-page filing doesn’t offer much in the way of details, but each subpeona orders the recipient to appear at the federal courthouse in Alexandria on July 10 at 10 a.m. to testify in trial of Manafort on charges stemming from Mueller’s investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Although Manafort faces no charges related to the Trump campaign, he is accused in cases filed both in Alexandria, Virginia and Washington, D.C. of hiding the work he did for and the money he made from a Russia-friendly political party in Ukraine and former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.

In Virginia, he is also accused of concealing foreign bank accounts, falsifying his income taxes and failing to report foreign bank accounts.

In Washington, Manafort faces counts of conspiracy to launder more than $30 million, making false statements, failing to follow lobbying disclosure laws and working as an unregistered foreign agent.

This story is developing …

I imagine all of them will be served on people the Mueller team has already been in contact with. He might not use all of them. They usually ask for more than they need, just in case they discover more witnesses right before trial, or decide to bring in rebuttal witnesses, etc. at the last minute.

In my jurisdiction the original subpoena is served on the named recipient. The second, duplicate copy is filed with the court with a certificate of service.

Does this mean there are 70 people or 70 crimes? Can you consolidate crimes in one
Subpoena? What will we know by these?

It has nothing to do with the number of crimes, but rather the number of witnesses the prosecution expects to have testify at trial to prove their case.

usually they all show up on first day but will be sworn in by Judge and released as long as they agree to appear when called by the attorneys when they are expected to actually take the stand to testify

some may even be cooperating witnesses but are still served with subpoena so they can be held in contempt if they don't comply. If they don't appear then a Judge will issue a bench warrant to have the US Marshal's pick them up and take them to Court

The other duplicate 35 original are filled out by the attorney issuing the subpoenas and sent back to the Court clerk reflecting a Certificate of Service showing the manner, time and place of service so the Court has a record of actual service before a non-appearing witness is arrested and held in contempt

No doubt there is code and regulation but such a sweeping enumeration would have never been passed or have been presented on the silent sleepy night for nare to hear.
