Pentagon Bans Sale of Chinese Phones on U.S. Military Bases
Source: The Daily Beast
The Pentagon is moving to stop the sale of Chinese-made phones from Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. in and near U.S. military base stores for potential security threats they say the devices could pose. The Wall Street Journal reports officials have said the Chinese government could order Chinese manufacturers to hack into products they make to spy or disable communications, although Huawei and ZTE have said they would never let that occur. A source told the Journal that the Pentagon is specifically concerned about Beijing tracking U.S. troop whereabouts with the phones. Huawei is the third largest mobile-phone maker in the world, behind Apple and Samsung. ZTE is the fourth largest seller of phones in the U.S. market. The retail stores affected would be in and around military bases, as well as ones overseas that cater to American soldiers and sailors.

Would you buy a Smartphone from a company that's controlled by the government?

(20,629 posts)used by low-cost carries like Tracfone. I have no doubt they sell lots of those phones on military bases, given how poorly many of the enlisted personnel in particular are paid.

(10,749 posts)Are they going to ban Chinese-made phones from being on US military bases? If not, then this is fundamentally pointless.
Also, check back in a year, and I'd put money on the likelihood that Chinese phones are still available for sale on US military bases.
And what's the cost of this decision? How many thousands of Chinese-made cell phones are currently available for sale on US military bases worldwide right now? What happens to those phones? Returned? I think not. Destroyed? Yeah, right. Someone is going to find a way to make personal money from this seemingly simply and probably sensible decision.
Also want to ask the question about from when, and for how long chinese phones have been available on US military bases.

(129,096 posts)The assembly of Apple products is (predominately) being done in China. And Chinese oligarchs are making huge efforts at acquiring chip technology (whether outright by buying the companies or by buying stakes in them) and they have Taiwan's own hub (that makes Apple's A10 CPU) right there in their backyard.
There have been articles about this for years. One interesting one is here - https://www.wired.com/2016/06/demonically-clever-backdoor-hides-inside-computer-chip/

ZTE, a company involved in hacking American cyber security.
A $500 million loan to Trump related projects works wonders to make America protect Chinese jobs. And some patents for Ivanka.
Too bad our coal miners did not think of that.
