Mueller raised possibility of presidential subpoena in meeting with Trump's legal team
Source: Washington Post
In a tense meeting in early March with the special counsel, President Trumps lawyers insisted he had no obligation to talk with federal investigators probing Russias interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.
But special counsel Robert S. Mueller III responded that he had another option if Trump declined: He could issue a subpoena for the president to appear before a grand jury, according to four people familiar with the encounter.
Muellers warning the first time he is known to have mentioned a possible subpoena to Trumps legal team spurred a sharp retort from John Dowd, then the presidents lead lawyer. This isnt some game, Dowd said, according to two people with knowledge of his comments. You are screwing with the work of the president of the United States.
The flare-up set in motion weeks of turmoil among Trumps attorneys as they debated how to deal with the special counsels request for an interview, a dispute that ultimately led to Dowds resignation.

(9,670 posts)I hope like hell the DOJ kicks his door down in the middle of the night to take him into custody.
Wearing the presidential seal as a shield against prosecution for criminal acts is an affront to the Constitution and everything we believe in. Prosecuting such an impostor is apolitical, and the opinions of 50 million misdirected, misinformed and deluded souls carry no weight under the circumstances.

(12,344 posts)It's in the Constitution. But he can indict without ever interviewing or issuing a subpoena to the target.

(73,559 posts)prefer grand juries, in which only their side is present (and presents), there is the option of a preliminary hearing (where the accused is allowed to have their side presented).
On edit: This is not to imply that Mr. Mueller might do so.

(73,559 posts)In a case such as those that Mr. Mueller is investigating, it is pretty unlikely. A grand jury has a lot of power ....especially a federal grand jury. It is, in fact, recognized for having independent powers under the judicial branch, rather than simply the legislative branch.

Trump has them all totally convinced he is above the law and the law does not count because he is an innocent victim.
