SEOUL, South Korea North Koreas leader, Kim Jong-un, told President Moon Jae-in of South Korea when they met that he would abandon his nuclear weapons if the United States would agree to formally end the Korean War and promise that it would not invade his country, a South Korean government spokesman said Sunday.
In a faith-building gesture ahead of a summit meeting with President Trump, Mr. Kim also said he would invite experts and journalists from South Korea and the United States to watch the shutdown next month of his countrys only known underground nuclear test site.
The comments by Mr. Kim were made on Friday when the leaders of the two Koreas met at Panmunjom, a village on their shared border, the spokesman, Yoon Young-chan, said on Sunday, providing additional details of the meeting.
I know the Americans are inherently disposed against us, but when they talk with us, they will see that I am not the kind of person who would shoot nuclear weapons to the south, over the Pacific or at the United States, Mr. Kim told Mr. Moon, according to Mr. Yoons account of the meeting.

UPDATE:
Seoul: North Koreas Kim Vows To Shut Nuke Test Site In May
By KIM TONG-HYUNG | April 29, 2018 9:27 am
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to shut down his countrys nuclear test site in May and disclose the process to experts and journalists from South Korea and the United States, Seouls presidential office said Sunday.
Kim also told South Korean President Moon Jae-in during their historic summit on Friday that the North would have no need to keep nuclear weapons if Washington commits to formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War and signs a non-aggression pact with Pyongyang, the presidential Blue House said.
While there are lingering questions about whether North Korea will ever decide to fully relinquish its nukes as it heads into negotiations with the United States, Kims comments qualify as the Norths most specific acknowledgment yet that denuclearization would constitute surrendering its weapons.
Seoul, which shuttled between Pyongyang and Washington to broker talks between Kim and President Donald Trump that are expected in May or June, has said Kim has expressed genuine interest in dealing away his nuclear weapons. But there has been skepticism because North Korea for decades has been pushing a concept of denuclearization that bears no resemblance to the American definition, vowing to pursue nuclear development unless Washington removes its troops and the nuclear umbrella defending South Korea and Japan.

(10,779 posts)There is no way in hell he would give up their nukes on a promise from Trump. How can anyone be dumb enough to think Kim is that dumb, when Trump threatens to unilaterally withdraw from the Iran deal on a daily basis, even though they've abided by it?

(39,405 posts)Look what happened after we normalized relations with Libya.
Second to nukes, having no diplomatic relations with us is probably the most effective way to avoid regime change.
We could do it without sending in troops too, just the usual mix of NGO's, mercenaries, and just enough locals to make it look organic.

(45,484 posts)because of the US's long history of doing toppling governments and installing friendly dictators to support US corporate interests. Many countries don't trust the US.

(4,066 posts)I think Un would be a fool to shut it all down. That didn't go well for Hussain in Iraq or Kadaffi in Libya.
These overtures make me even more suspicious there is something seriously wrong/bad going on in his nuke program. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the majority of his scientists were in a radiation accident or something similarly bad that makes continuing the program almost impossible.

(42,287 posts)They keep throwing around terms without definitions--"denuclearization" is one, but what about the fabled "unification"? Is Kim going to give up power and retire to some little farm somewhere? Or strip the treasury to retire in luxury? Or stick around and help run the new Korea? You have have a goal before you work toward it. (Yeah, I'm very skeptical of a change in the scenario that is older than I am and I'm over 60)

(7,530 posts)TRUMP: "If we have nukes, why can't we use them?"
Kim has pretty much chumped the President. He got what he wants, a place at the World table, and if Trump doesn't agree, he looks really bad.
