Bill Cosby guilty of sexual assault, jury rules as trial ends
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer
A Montgomery County jury has found Bill Cosby guilty of the only criminal charges to emerge from a career-ending scandal fueled by dozens of women who accused the entertainer once known as Americas Dad of sexual assault.
After about 13 hours of deliberation, the panel of seven men and five women on Thursday convicted him of drugging and assaulting Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee who said she had seen Cosby as a father-figure and mentor until the early 2004 night that he accosted her at his Cheltenham Township home.
The 80-year-old entertainer could face up to 10 years in prison.
The verdict delivered the first celebrity conviction of the #MeToo era in a case that in many ways stood at its vanguard and shone a spotlight on the role sexual entitlement, a scandal-hungry media and Hollywoods casting couch culture played in the ruin of a comedy icon.

(18,837 posts)Cosby, 80, was retried on three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. Constand, 44, was a former womens basketball coach at Temple University where Cosby was a trustee and major donor during the time he assaulted her.
In June of last year, a jury failed to reach a unanimous decision on the charges and the judge declared a mistrial. Cosby reportedly paid Constand $3.4 million in a civil lawsuit settlement in 2006.
[R]emember this case is about trust, betrayal and the inability to consent, Assistant District Attorney Kristen Feden said in her closing arguments on Tuesday, according to Deadline.

(2,861 posts)Robin Thede's show is on BET on Thursday nights. I think she did her first season finale last week though. She was a regular on The Nightly Show. I really liked her and when I found out she had her own show I put it on my DVR. I don't know when it will start again though.

(89 posts)The jury made the right decision. Cosby was clearly guilty. But it's like...hell I can't even describe it.

(5,914 posts)We all thought he was a great guy. We all thought he was a role model. But we all were wrong, obviously. And it hurts, because we all feel like fools now.
We didn't know that he was doing all that horrible stuff behind the scenes.
It's just another lesson in the fact that "heroes" should remain fictional.

(6,384 posts)He appeared in a show called "I Spy" with Robert Culp - the first time a black actor had headlined a TV series with a white actor. it was very good; suspenseful, plenty of action, and it was very funny. Made in the late 60s.
And I don't understand why he did what he did - he was an attractive man, and I'm sure there would have been plenty of women happy to go out with him, and wherever that might lead.
But the drugging, etc. - so sick. And very sad for it all to end as it did.

Hell appeal it, of course, but in the meantime he is now a convicted felon. And if anyone else can still take him to court they will now.

(62,276 posts)What this means for his legacy is not that he will be remembered, it means no one will want to keep his memory going. Before this got out we would've waxed nostalgic about our favorite Cosby moments. Now we simply won't discuss him or his show.
The only people who will even know who he was will be old retro TV watchers who want to look at archives of old 80s shows.

I didn't see him scream- too bad. Shoulda thought of that decades ago before drugging and raping women. Pfft.

(4,558 posts)I'm very glad for the women who are finally getting justice for the terrible ordeals they were put through.
This whole case still makes me terribly sad. I was one of the MANY who really looked up to Bill Cosby. From my childhood days of watching him on Fat Albert to the Cosby Show of the 80's/90's. I feel for all the kids who grew up looking up to him as a great role model.
