Update: East Area Rapist suspect arrested in decades-old case, source says. FBI agents at home of Citrus Heights man

Authorities are expected to announce the arrest Wednesday of a suspect in the decades-old East Area Rapist case, The Bee has learned.

The suspect has been living in the Sacramento area and was identified after a renewed push of the investigation by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, a source said.

The East Area Rapist, also known as the Golden State Killer, the Original Night Stalker and the Diamond Knot Killer, is believed to have killed at least 12 people, raped at least 45 victims and burglarized hundreds of homes.

FBI agents and law enforcement from Sacramento County and Southern California were outside a home this morning in Citrus Heights near the city border with Roseville. Joseph James DeAngelo has lived there for at least two decades, public records show.

This man's crimes were horrendous, too bad he's 72 and when convicted at that age won't spend too much time in jail.

I was a frightening time--especially because he was never caught, just seemed to vanish into the ether. So scary that he still lived in the same area to this day.

adding to the drama, he drove a big rig at the time, and he was questioned by the police after someone had reported seeing someone hiding their bike in the back of the rig, (which he kept parked near one of the victims homes). Fortunately my stepdad had an airtight alibi (he was with our family at the time the crime took place, miles away). But it was very upsetting thinking my friends might think such a sweet, loving family man like my stepdad could ever do anything so evil. Sorry to hear you had to deal with anything like that.

I am really curious how they got the guy after all these years?

She was married to Patton Oswalt, and he is very pleased and excited today. (Look at his Twitter feed.)

Probably at the height of his murderous crime spree.

Molly Ringwald lived just down the street from me.
